Same here. And you're not the only one I'm having these kinds of discussions: The owner of your former 308 has a Superformance Cobra and pretty much the same line of arguing as you do. The Superformance GT40 and the Cobra are continuation cars and replicas that are *VERY* close to the originals (90% exchangable parts with the original on the GT40 side). The 308 in question here is a rebody. If left as is (meaning panels hung, badge applied, but nothing changed in the engine, suspension etc) I actually agree with you, that it is a poser car. Personally I prefer the looks of a GTO over the looks of a 308, which is why I would love to do that conversion to my 308. But if you don't beef up the engine, indeed you're left with a poser, a car of which the performance can't back up its looks. A problem the whole 308 series suffers from to begin with... The problem I'm having is with folks lashing out about a project like this simply because it is different. Personally I don't understand people climbing mountains or jumping out of perfectly good airplanes, but I can see how somebody wants the challenge of trying to recreate a GTO. But they have to do the whole car, not "just" the panels. PS: Let me know when I can come over for a ride in that GT40. Pleazzzeeee.
Perhaps if he just called it a 308GTO? As for the GT40, it's still in North Carolina waiting for a gearbox. All the ZF's for these cars are built by the son of the guy who was the gearbox specialist on the race team in the '60s. Unfortunately, he builds them one....gear....box....at....a....time!! It's been two years since I ordered the car!
I believe there is an FChatter on here who made his own rebody (actually into a 288 GTO Spider) and calls it 308GTO IIRC. Rome wasn't built in a day. All good things take time.
I'm with Andreas on this, the 288GTO body was the 308 on steroids, however it also had the balls to go with it. The subject of this thread just needs a few parts from Nick such as the supercharger and it too will have the "balls" to go with the look, not too expensive a proposition really. Unsupported assumptions have been made in this thread, e.g., the demise of anothër "...pristine 308...". My training does not permit this type of assumption, I need evidence. To me it would be more logical to assume that the donor 308 was anything but pristine - why would anyone waste the value in even just an above average example when there are a enough shabby ones out there, it doesn't make sense. I stand as my own example: I look for cheap, damaged, rusty, unloved Mondials (preferably just cosmetic damage) to turn into Monzers for the simple reason that they ARE cheap and if I don't rescue them (in a Frankenstein/Robocop sort of way) then they are going to be parted out because they are unviable as a conventional repair proposition. All IMHO of course.
Yup, Bert. I realize that isn't a Spider actually. The "pristine example" argument is another reason why I didn't have the courage yet to rebody my own 308: It really goes against my heart to cut off perfectly fine fenders and body parts. Now - heaven forbid - if there were rust or a fender bender, things would look different.
Well I missed the opportunity and would have loved having it. I for one can't afford a real one but for "MY OWN" sake I could live with a clone, replicar, or what else you want to call it (Bastard Child). People don't always "ruin" cars to impress others, they might be saving one by adding their own tastes to it.
My original Mondial was apparently in very good condition when I bought it. It then suffered a small accident when a pickup truck decided it wanted to be in my lane without waiting for me not to be there. This was possibly the original impetus for the redesign as the parts were just so expensive. After removing the moulds and the new shape foam and filler from the project, however, I now know that the car had been filled and resprayed on top of other layers of paint and filler and had future rust issues - not serious but eye-opening regarding the actual state of the vehicle. This condition would have needed ongoing rectification or a strip to bare metal. I am therefore quite comfortable with having virtually destroyed a "pristine" Mondial to create the Monzer. My point is that I doubt that there are really many truly pristine 308s (or Mondials) out there. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Well, It's for sale again.... I purchased it from AutoSport Design (D@*Ks)...Check it out in the FerrariAds.
Grant it, many people feel the 288 GTO is the best looking Ferrari of that era, but after comparing the replica to the real thing, its pathetic (the lights are even wrong!). I would still consider this a Ferrari, it has all Ferrari parts but just looks a little bastardized.
I wouldn't want it even for present!!!! each ferrari owns a soul... and... that one sound like Dr.Frankenstein experiment!
The soul of a Ferrari is in the engine. And less poetic a Ferrari is a Ferrari when it has a valid s/n. This car has both.
ok maybe I have been a bit rude and I ask for excuses... but... thinking about in a less "angry way" as ferrari purist, I feel like saying: A Ferrari, to me, is a car that comes out from the study and experience of the Maranello firm... everything produced there is a Ferrari to me... the rest can be nice, having serial numbers, having the same parts... but it doesn't come out from Ferrari... and from the team who wanted it like that. It's Ferrari making their cars... not others. g
So what about all the Italian coach builders? Zagato, Pininfarina, Michellotti, did they all create Ferraris without souls, just Frankenstein cars?
When they work in a ferrari project...they give theri contribution to the final make of a Ferrari. when they create their concepts and their own interpretations of ALREADY EXISTING CARS, they create a Zagato, a Michelotti, a Pininfarina. g
oh that's not Religious Truth... that's just my point as I said before... maybe I am wrong. but that's what I feel in all honesty. completely respecting what you wrote. g
I have no problem with your opinion/feelings. I completely disagree, but that's not the point. What is interesting though is your point of view, which is VERY strong. I have rarely met somebody with such a strong belief. And believe me, I have met a lot of Ferraristi over the years.
Problem is a 308 looks already faster than it is. If you make it into a GTO you really got yourself a pretender unless you beef up the engine's hp output.
