Despite his iceman image, Raikkonen lost his cool during Friday’s second practice session and his actions led to a FIA investigation.

On his way to lapping fastest during the session, the Finn had an altercation with Scott Speed. The American, driving for Toro Rosso, allegedly blocked Raikkonen leading to the 27 year old giving him the birdie in retaliation.

Speaking to reporters about the incident, Raikkonen said, “He just didn’t look in his mirrors and blocked me completely.”

Stewards examined onboard footage, but decided against punishing the Ferrari driver for showing his middle finger to the brash American. Although keen not to condone such track activity, a FIA official confirmed to German newspaper ‘Bild’ that ‘he will not be punished’.

There is a famous picture of Mansell giving the finger to Ivan Capelli in his Leyton House March mid-turn.

 

I remember one instance when the otherwise mild mannered DC did it and was fined big time.

I really don't get what the fuzz is all about. Showing the finger or the fist is IMHO a fairly natural reaction when racing. In racing you don't have time to communicate with your fellow racers, so if somebody screws up you need to get the message across quickly.

Sanctioning bodies who penalize this behavior are idiots.

They will stop racing when they are no longer capable of winning. If you really cared about racing, you ought to be complaining about the presence of guys like Ralf, not front-running drivers whose attitudes you don't like.

I do not like JPM at all, but I don't think flipping someone the bird is that big a deal.

In fact I must admit that I myself have done this unspeakable act once or twice myself. Never have been fined or arrested. Maybe I should have been.

I agree with the post about JPM publicity. $10k for all this attention is not a bad deal. LOL

NASCAR has to show that they are against this stuff...you know a family sport. Though it's getting more like pro wrestling all the time. Good guys vs bad guys. Nice white American southern hicks against them nasty and bad foreigners. Follow the money.

Because some people here think that anyone who drives for Ferrari is automatically conferred mythic status and is above criticism and that anyone who is competitive and not driving a Ferrari is a piece of ****.

JPM speaks his mind tells people what he thinks of them doesn't do the polished a$$ kissing most F1 drivers do. Good on him, guess he's not white enough for you guys. I have not seen anybody whitewashing Michael but rather seriously discussing his pros and cons during his F1 times. Then there are always those that think Senna was a saint and whitewash (by your own standard) his more than questionable track conduct.

The best part is, I like neither of them. Neither Michael nor Senna, nevertheless I agree they both were exceptional drivers. Better than we will probably ever see in our times. If you have seen Senna live (and I have) you can count yourself blessed. I assume you have judging by the screen name. If not, I assure you it was magical. Still does not make me change my mind about them as people.

 

I like that your sticking up for him, he reminds me of the pure racing driver. The one who desperately wants to win and woln't slow down and settle for 3rd or 4th. The guy who will tell it like it is and go flat out, he's a mix between Nigel Mansell and Eddie Irvine.

While I agree with you about JPM, this is Ferrarichat, a website for Ferrari owners. I would be willing to wager that there are contributors here who earn far more than JPM.

 

JPM has to be earning low 8 figures right, there are probably some on FChat with that type of money, I would guess it is definitely less than 5.

The problem here is too many "experts" that have never seen actual close competion themselves. Racing is close contact. You run for one thing and one thing only. 1st. Does not matter who is in the way. Someone blocking in front of you as Ralph has done time after time, you will get pushed off or bumped or rubbed. The way it is out there. At the same time in Ralphs position, just because your brother is behind you with a faster car does not mean you have to give up the position for free.

That is what racing is about! (speaking from the drivers seat, not the armchair)

Lesson for your son: Someone is blocking your progress...get away from him as quick as you can.
