No as it's connected to the two endplates it should be fine. Just because it's thin doesn't mean it'll flex. Saying that it'll flex is like saying a top rear wing section must be flexing because it doesn't have an attachment point in the center. Look at all of the rear wings that don't have a center post and don't flex.

    QUESTION:

I realize that F1 cars are designed down to the smallest detail to save ever .0001 second on the track. But honestly, how much could this wing possibly make the car go around the track faster? I mean I'm sure they spent a fortune developing this little "concept" but I just don't see how significant any benefit would be.

I mean when we watch the races difference between 1st 2nd and 3rd place is nothing close. It's not like they are inching each other out at every finish line. So why would they care about something as little as this????

Qualifying. These days, F1 races are won at the first corner, so being in a good position to get there first is pretty important.

I wonder what Newey thinks about this...

They have to spend their millions developing something don't they? If it was a benefit at all, I'm sure another team would have already have tried that by now.

Sounds right, thats why some teams employ 500+ people and pay their drivers obscene amounts.

you must be referring to the F1 team with the highest payroll, yet still hasn't won a race. They make damn good road cars but F1 isn't quite the place for Toyota.

What the hell kind of Toyota would you refer to as being "damn good"? What are you one of those arrogant tree hugging prius drivers? Those people get off on the smell of their own farts, thinking they're morally superior.:p

as you can see the toyota has the high nose and mclaren has designed the way of a low nose. now thats smart because they are well below the rules refrence line so they can do this kind of thing.

The new front element is in the form of an arch with no support in the center whatsoever. I would imagine that unless it is made of some super ridgid material, when traveling at >180mph, it will probably flex. Then again, I am not an aerodynamic or structural engineer.

Oh, and FWIW I don't think that center section just above the nose is really producing downforce. I'd say they have it raised above the nose to aid in directing airflow above the car toward the intake and rear wing.

*LOL* So much for the "reinforced carbonfiber", the wings are without a doubt flexing at speed (See other threads from today's practice session). Being so thin and span the complete width of the front wing with zero anchor or structural support in the mid-point area, there is no way that it was not going to flex to a certain extend at top speed. IMHO, you can try to get around the laws of physics, but you can never change them.

    I'm thrilled about 2008:

regulations as published but possible elimination of aerodynamic appendices (barge boards, winglets, chimneys, etc) forward of rear wheel centreline and behind front wheel centreline

I love innovation, but the vain aesthetic side of me pines for a car that looks more like an updated 641/2.

Be interesting to see how the bodies of the cars change without all the wings and winglets sticking out of them.
