i have been told by a ferrari dealer that the f1 gear box is a joke and not to go near it but instead to buy the manual, he said that it is a alfaromeo box and that it says it if you look underneath and read it and that the clutch will only last 5000km in it. is this true??????????? can anybody help????????

While an F1/SMG type gearbox is fun to drive, they do then to be less reliable than the tried and true foot clutch/stick shift gearbox...and they also tend to burn out clutches at a faster pace...

These discussions are such bull.... I have owned two 355 GTS F1 and driven them both very hard. I haven’t had any problems what so ever and wouldn’t go with a manual on my Ferrari again. The salesman obviously doesn’t know what he is talking about!

He is just feeding you a lot of BS.
There are a few things you need to know about a F1 gearbox and a few habits you need to avoid to prolong the life of the clutch, but other than that it's a great gearbox. Clutch life, depending on you driving habits could reach +/- 20000 kms.

I agree... if treated with a bit of care and common sense driving, the F1 system can't be beat. I have it on two cars - a Maserati Spyder and a Ferrari F355 - and I feel it's the only way I'd want to go. BTW, my F355 just turned 24K and the original clutch and F1 system are still going strong.

The gearbox is the same whether F1 or manual. Clutches should last over 20,000 miles according to my dealer(the first clutch lasted 30,000 miles in mine).

Why would a dealer would bad mouth F1 systems when they usually have alot of cars with them for sale?

He's a troll. He has 3 posts. He comes here every couple of months and makes some comment questioning 360 or F1 reliability and takes off for a while to sit back and see what he stirred up.

When you try to talk to a rock all you get is an echo from the last guy who tried to talk to the rock.

    Asked, learned, drove, enjoyed! Sheesh!

Because you have asked the same question 3 times and have been provided good answers buy a multititude of people and have been directed to a large quantity of additional information all to return with the fanciful statement that the car uses an Alfa Romeo trans. Forgive me if at some point I begin to think you are not serious in your quest for knowledge.
