Does anyone have any tips on changing the shocks on the rear of a 1978 308 GTB? What other suspension parts have to be removed to get the shock/springs out for the shock swap?

I just did the fronts and had to undo the lower ball joint mounting to the A-arm to get enough clearance to remove the shock/spring assembly to move the spring to the new shock.

    Any and all suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks much.

It's been awhile since I did mine. Hopefully someone will have more details. The only thing that stands out in my memory is that I had to unbolt the oil cooler from its mount points (but Not disconnect the lines) so I could shift it to get the shock assembly out.

I recall disconnecting the roll bar to get the suspension to drop enough to get the shock out. Took a little jiggling but it came out of the tight fit.

The rears were easier than the fronts when I switched to QA-1s. I don't remember doing anything to the oil cooler, but I did have to take off the sway bar.

Your help made this job on my 1978 308 GTB a piece of cake.

On right side, had to remove several U.S. spec emission components to get the shock/spring assembly out through the top of the engine bay. Also had to disconnect the rear anti-roll bar to allow the suspenstion to drop sufficiently to get the shock/coil spring assembly out. (Did one side of the car at a time.) Used a jack under the lower A arm to keep things under control.

Right side was more complicated. Had to disessemble the oil cooler/shroud assembly and mounting bracket and also the rear bank distributor cap/coil connection to get enough room to get the shock/coil spring assemply out. Will see tomorrow a.m. if the car still run s& doesn't spew oil!

    Thanks again.

I just put adjustable Konis on my 77 GTB and only remember pulling off the wheels the 4 bolts for ea of the wheelwells and dropping them out the bottom. Then again all my emissions stuff is sitting under my bench. : ) My biggest pain was redrilling out my shock mounting bolts to SAE because of the spherical rod ends Koni used when they built my shocks.
