I filled up the car after a nice 120mile drive today. The tank was filled up to the fuel filler hose and I could see the gas sitting there when I put the cap back on. Once I started driving i could smell an overwhelming gas odor, like there was a puddle inside the car. I opened the windows thinking that I spilled some on me and it went away.
Once I got home, I popped the hood to check things out...

I found that the drivers side gas tank had a little bit of gas sitting on top of the assembly for the fuel level indicator. All the hoses were dry. I'm thinking that the gas came out of the top of the tank here. Is this common? Is there a gasket under the electrical connections?
I appreciate any help with this one!

Since no one has answered, I'll give this advice....

You do know that gasoline expands, especially after you fill up you tank and especially when it gets warm.

Maybe you overfilled and the gas pressure pushed it out of the gasket on top of the tank.

    Just a thought....

    Thanks James!
I'm sure that I overfilled it. I was wondering if the splashing around would cause it to leak from the gasket on top.

If so, then do I need to replace that gasket?

    TIA,

    JIM

You have a problem. Gas will not expand and leak out of the gasket at the sending unit area. I fill to the top of the fuel hose and it has never leaked. Any "pressure"will come out of the overflow hose in the neck of the fuel pipe. I believe you have a leak in the gasket and need to get it fixed. Should not be to much of a problem. Get it done ASAP before it lights up.

NEVER drive GT4 when you smell gas like that. Stop and find out what is causing it. You're lucky you didn't burn your new toy right down to the ground Jim.

Like I said, I thought I spilled a little on me at first....drove straight home and checked it out....haven't driven her since.

Anyone know what the PN# is for that gasket?

    TIA,

Jim that hose on the top of the tank leading to the vent tubes in the pic looks really bad. you can see the cracks in it above and below the clamp. Looks like a bulge in it as well.

    Better replace everything you can.

Yes -- Change ALL of the gas lines on the car. Based on the condition of what can be seen in the pictures you posted, they look like they need it, badly. Old hoses = potential fuel leaks = major fire hazard. It's a bit of a PITA to change some of them without pulling the engine, but do it. And consider draining the tanks and changing the cross-over hoses at the bottom. They are often forgotten but deteriorate just like the rest. When I pulled them off my '78 308 recently, they were definitely showing signs of their age, with substantial cracking. No time like the present to take care of this.

Alternative -- carry a BIG fire extinguisher in the car, and know how to use it.

    My $.02.

MY thoughts as well, based on the condition of that one hose in the picture, I would replace all the hoses in the fuel system. Did it recently in my 328, did not worry about part numbers, just removed all the hoses, measured them and bought local replacements (top quality hoses and clamps). After all a hose is a hose.

All kinds of threads on this but i still never know where all the lines are or what the different sizes are or where to get 'em. people talk of the gates hoses but where to get 'em and then what size again etc.

The rubber hose for the Fuel Filler neck is a MAJOR cause of fires and should be replaced ASAP.
Many threads on it, if you do a "search". (at least it's critical on 308gtb,gts) not sure about gt4's.

My fuel filler neck hose has been replaced but i wanna replace it again cuz i can see cracks from the underside with a flashlight. It's only like 3 1/2 inches long. Can someone again tell me the width. don't wanna use a standard size but want to use the actual metric size.

Make sure all hoses that carry gas/gas fumes are rated for gasoline.

Exactly correct. Most of the hose in the fuel system on my '78 seemed to be 5/16". Some was 1/4", mainly the vacuum lines. The cross-overs were 1 3/8" IIRC. I don't remember the filler neck size, but will check and post. Be sure to buy top quality hose and clamps.

I got the Gates hose at NAPA in my area. All the stock fuel hose I got from them was Gates stuff. And as someone else mentioned, it is extremely important that you be sure you only use fuel line in the fuel system and related vacuum lines. And don't forget to go up over the right side tank and change all the little hoses up there to the charcoal cannister, etc. Those are easily overlooked.

Solved my little gas leak issue. Before I go any further, I should have listened more closely to Dave as I now see HOW VERY LUCKY I AM!!!!!

So, as you can see by the pictures below, when the fuel ran up and across the fuel reclamation system and down into the left tank, the little 3.5inch verticle hose (see 1st set of pics...) just leaked fuel out onto the top of the tank! I looked at the hose and knew that it was dry and a little stiff, but could not tell that it was in this condition whatsoever! I guess the rule of thumb is, IF YOU CANNOT BE CERTAIN THAT THE HOSE IS FAIRLY NEW......REPLACE IT! The fuel filler hose was the 1st thing I did with the car after I got it, I should've done this as well.

I did order the fuel sending unit gasket and will eventually do that as a preventive measure, but this is the culprit. The hose was so stiff that I had to cut it in the center to get it off.
BTW, all of the other hoses in the fuel system had been previously replaced! I'm not sure if this one was overlooked. Anyway, I'm just glad that we're not sprinkling my ashes on a golf course today and that I'll be driving her again by Thursday!

    Thanks for all the replies!

Who was it that pointed out that hose? *winks*

Gonna check prices at Brumos Porsche and the BMW place tomorrow.

Anyone got a pic of the hoses underneath the car..i've jacked mine up and can't find the one that connects the two gas tanks at the bottom.

YES YOU DID!!!! Thank you again!!!
Dave had said before to stop immediately and investigate should you ever smell gas, that's why he got props... :)

I can see the hose from up top, then again, I don't have stuff like air pumps, thermal reactors blocking my view of the ground. :)
I can snap a pic if needed. The hose on my car is on the left (drivers) side. There is a metal tube that runs towards the right tank. It doesn't get very far before there is a rubber connector hose....
    FWIW, YMMV!

    A lucky escape! :)

That piece of c**p that split is a prime example of why I only use original style hose. It even looks like heater hose? That particular hose is supposed to be clear, at least when new.

I would heed the advice of others, replace every single piece of fuel related hose in the car. And especially the filler hose and the 2 hoses on bottom transfer pipe. Do not cheap out on these, make very sure they are fuel rated. (The 2 transfer pipe hoses cost me > $50 each from Ferrari, no regrets). My car smelled of gas on the first 2 rides I took in it, since replacing all the hoses no smell at all. If yours is a US car there are lots of hoses, mostly related to the vapour system. Euro cars like mine have only a few fuel related hoses.

BTW the pipe that the broken hose is connected to is supposed to be plain aluminum, not covered with undercoating?

Thanks! I'm feeling so lucky that I bought a lottery ticket yesterday! :)
Seriously though, I was a huge proponent of doing the fuel filler hose right away that I feel like a dork that this happened! Oh well, I'm just thankful that nothing bad happened.

I've been wondering why the aluminum pipe is covered like that.
