Wow this is old The Machinist Ichi the Killer Blood Diamond Babel Cars (its actually pretty good!) Kung Fu Hustle (LOVED it!) Casino Royale (one of the top 3 Bond films) Talladega Nights (I dont like lowbrow slapstick, but this wasn't, it was good!) V for Vendetta The Devil Wears Prada The Good Shepherd Deja Vu Batman Begins 40 Year Old Virgin (actually pretty good too, surprisingly) Sin City The Village (better than that lady in water crap) That should keep you busy for a bit. most of them are relatively new releases, so you may not have seen many/most of 'em. Something I saw recently that was actually pretty decent, though I am almost embarassed to admit it, is Fast and Furios 3: Tokyo Drift. Pretty good car movie, actually.
I never knew that Fiennes was beaten out by absolutely NO talent Tommy Lee Jones!!! SHOCKED TO HELL! It proved Hollywood had gone mad.....

There are some great movies on this list but I think you missed a few The Great Escape (great cast, great motorcycle stunt) Patton (the hidden side of the military) The Great Race (just plain ol' car fun) Mr. Roberts (great performances, poignant war story) The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (best spagetti western EVER) The Fortune Cookie (Jack Lemmon and Walter Mathau at their best) Citizen Kane (shockingly ahead of its time) Casablanca (is there a better love story for guys?) The Malteze Falcon (Bogart in his coolest form) The African Queen (Bogart in his most interesting performance) The Bridge over the River Kwai (the best "ironic" war story) The Best Years of our Lives (best post war movie ever) In Harm's Way (best soap opera of WW2) High Noon (Gary Cooper in a simple but powerful story of human failings) The Apartment (Terrific story and great cast showing the sexual manipulation in the corporate world) Some Like it Hot (Marilyn Monroe fat and looking fantastic while Tony Curtis looks good in drag) Key Largo (great characters and acting) Dirty Harry (the start of the vigilante movies -- still the best) Bullit (classic scenes duplicated a million times since) LeMans (most honest racing movie ever) Lust for Life (who would have thought a movie about an artist would be so good) Paths of Glory (painful to watch saga of the stupidity of the beauracracy of war) The Guns of Navarone (great story of personalities in war) 12 Angry Men (the original: courtroom drama extremely well played) The Hustler (Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason at their best) Harvey (is being insane actually better?) 12 o'clock high (best movie of the trials of B17 flyers) Sargent York (terrific movie about the conflicts of war vs duty) No time for sargents (making fun of the military at its best) North by Northwest (Cold war Hitchcock) A Touch of Evil (Orson Wells in his best after Citizen Kane) The Agony and the Ecstasy (Amazing recreation of the Sisteen Chapel) Ball of Fire (Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck in a slickly written, fast talking movie comedy) Two women (Sophie Loren in an amazing film in her early carrer -- hard to watch at times)
Huzzah! Had to go back 5 years to find a post showing love for classics. I mention this because Grand Hotel was on last night. One of my favorites. First scene between Joan Crawford & John Barrymore - sexy without being raunchy. And, for those of you who only remember her from Mommy Dearest, I recommend this movie from when she was a young ingenue...T
I really miss Blockbuster, they had a great section years ago, called the AFI Top 100. Id rent from that section almost every other day. Id still recommend anything on that list, I'm sure its online. But my favorites are| Goodfellas Jaws Pulp Fiction Saving Private Ryan A little filmed called No Man's Land, its not the movie itself, its the Porsches and when one suggests stealing a 512BB, "Italian trash I only steal Porsches!" Terms of Endearment The Searchers Highlander Those are top watches many more! found the AFI top 100 of all time| American Film Institute So when someone wants a recommendation I just say anything on the list because my favorites except for a few are on it!
Great list. I really gotta watch The Searchers again. It's been way too long. Probably Duke's greatest? I like the AFI lists, but then I tend to bias towards old movies. I'd quibble with some of the Uber-oldies like Gold Rush, as I don't think it is Chaplin's best - Modern Times and City Lights are better IMO. Likewise, Lillian Gish did many things better than Intolerance, which is a trudge to watch, e.g., the Scarlett Letter, Orphans of the Storm, Way Down East, The Wind, ...for anyone who wants to see silent cinema at its finest...T
Goodfellas, usual suspects, shawshank redemption, saving private Ryan, gladiator, taxi driver, raging bull, deer hunter, Casablanca, Maltese falcon, the spaghetti western trilogy, platoon, the departed.
I did my degree in film and television production at Ryerson University in Toronto. Everyone gets a degree in marketing, etc. So wanted something unique, it can be applied to several other area's. We watched most of the well known films from the silent era all the way up to modern times in film history. The instructor was a big western and John Wayne fan, got bonus marks for listing The Searchers as a favorite movie and it shows Wayne was a brilliant actor. The way he holds his arm as he watches his family was genius.
