I like the idea of hybrids. Improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. However I hate the added upfront cost (which you won't get back in savings on gas) and those batteries can be a safety issue and will need to be replaced after awhile. I hate the prius, its ugly and the people who drive them tend to suck. I've had the misfortune of driving one to. Wow thats slow. And the handling sucks to. Terrible car.

more pollution is generated in the manufacture than than the average car could pump out in its lifetime so sort of pointless to start with the jetta tdi regularly gets 45mpg i have friends that do. also even in my 2.3 liter supercharged mercedes I have managed as high as 39mpg, normal driving nets 33mpg, lead foot and I still get 27mpg not too shabby if you ask me.

then we have dumb stuff like the escape hybrid that does 30mpg ummm whats the freakin point just buy a civic,or a cavalier for petes sake. I have actually driven a prius the novelty was fun but its just that a novelty if you want to go green get a tesla roadster 0 tailpipe emmissions ever. lets all just get off of the environment already our carbon emmisions are not destroying the planet. things like toxic ground water pollution are a topic that dosent come up too much in this crazy whaco world we all live in. the planet will get warmer then guess what it will get cooler again then surprise it will get warmer again... process repeats for the next 10,000,000 years tillt he sun blows and we all die anyway.

Wow, the normally unflappable Bullfighter in a tizzy?!? A sight to see indeed. :D

I like the idea behind the Prius, and any attempted technology (successful or not) that seeks to improve the automotive breed. Global warming or not, there are too many cars on the road, too much brown stuff in the air over every city of any significance, and a shrinking supply of the slippery stuff which puts us into direct conflict with too many religious fanatics.

So improvement HAS to happen. It may be painful, it may be ugly at times, but at least there seems to be a start. And even if they are smug or overly slow drivers, at least they are doing SOMETHING they believe is for the good of the planet, and for us all. Smug, and even possibly misguided, altruism is infintely better than none at all. In my book, that buys them a heck of a lot of slack.

It's not the cars, it's the drivers, or at least some driver's holier-than-thou attitudes

    I meant the Prius ;)

Both the highlander and rx400h are great examples of what you can do with a hybrid drivetrain and make it work well.

Odd, I have troubles with speeding cut you off lane changing prius driver's in my area...

NEVER been annoyed by their speed out of a light. Some are indeed dumb though, the guy that kept cutting me off trying to weave his way ahead in traffic, I'd carefuly choose my lane at a stoplight, and be right past him again. Then he'd come flying up, and cut me off again... over and over... I rarely get confrontational, but I started to take the continually cutting in front of me after I worked by him a bit personal.

One of my therapists said I need to lash out more and indulge in some harmless hatemongering. It's fantastic, actually.

Yes, absolutely, pollution is a problem, and global warming probably is a problem. I believe it's happening. I'm just looking to cars like the Tesla and companies like BMW with its hydrogen concepts to solve the problem properly. I don't think Toyota's ugly little econo-box, with its mongrel technology, is a solution, but I applaud Toyota for taking a step away from pure fuel combustion.

But it seems to be playing to all the car-hating granola people. A real car company, like Porsche, BMW or Ferrari, would do this out of love for driving -- not to spite it. And unfortunately a lot of the Prius crowd seem to feel like they own the road.

If elected governor of California, I will restrict Priuses to the right lane or maybe the berm.

I thought the Prius first gained traction in West Coast communities as a public 'statement' to be driven by the maid or other hired help. The owners didn't give up their private jets, or the big Bentleys. They are now starting to litter the roadways here in the NE, but frankly, they have not gotten in my way when I commute. Regardless of the hype over 'green power' (and the misleading environmental impact of battery production), at least they are small! I am still much more annoyed by the number of monster lux SUVs driven by one person, needing wide load clearance treatment, hogging the passing lane. And usually driving well below the marked speed.

I've been thinking about getting '11 MPG' or similar. But then wouldn't my car get torched? Or have Birkenstock marks on the bonnet?

Yeah, i thought it was Paris haters unite too.

But on the topic of Prius.. GRRR, i was in the servo the other day pulling up to the bowser and there was this tool filling up her prius with high performance premium unleaded. WTF... She put close to 50 dollars in it.
She was a yuppie B1TCH, i could tell..
My parents friends bought a Prius recently, and they boast about how good it is, and how it makes no noise.. Well i like noise, and i'll all for internal combustion!

    Enough of my rant

A few reports have been published about the actual mileage the Prius gets.

You have to accelerate at an impossibly slow speed somewhere around 3mph all the way up to 60 mph to get the mileage listed on the window sticker.

HAHAHaHAHHA. Premium gas in a Prius! That's Classic!

I knew a girl one time... just when she turned 16 and had never pumped gas before.... asked the guy working the gas station: "I see gas for 89, 91, and 93... but my car is a 1997, so what should I use?" LMAO :D

I think Bullfighter needs to date a nice hairy leg/armpit granola chick for awhile and switch cars, her in the 328 and him in the Prius, she would probably have some nice CDs of kumbaya and give peace a chance and Sara McLaughlin to listen to while attempting to get up to the 35mph speed limit after each stop light

I like to take my 1977 pre-cat, carb, slightly rich-jetted 308 and get around in front of the obnoxious Prius drivers so they can eat my hydrocarbons for a while. It only takes them about 10 seconds to slam on the brakes and change lanes so they can clear the tears streaming down their faces from their burning eyes. ;) The pre-cat 308 produces literally a thousand times the hydrocarbons of a Prius, so they are going to need to sell a lot of them to make up for ME. :D

As for the Prius as a car, R&T did a story on them a year or so ago and found.

    1. They don't get that great mileage. My old 1990 Civic did about the same. All you need is a car with a small engine and you can get 40-45 MPG too.

    2. They are complicated and could be expensive in the long term, ESPECIALLY when all the battery packs start to die and need to be replaced.

    3. When compared with similar non-hybrid models (i.e. such as the hylander hybrid versus non-hybrid) the cost differential is so high that it will take more than 10 years in fuel savings to pay for the difference. Unless you plan to drive the car AT LEAST 10 years and assuming it is just as reliable as a non-hybrid, you will LOSE money buying a hybrid over a non-hybrid. (Given that most will finance the Prius for at least 5 years, the interest on the additional cost of the hybrid probably means that the car can't possibly run long enough to realize enough savings in fuel to offset the cost of the hybrid.) But hey, if it turns your needle, go for it.

The Top Gear episode is funny and 100% on. In sum, it's a lousy answer to how to get better fuel economy.

Yeah, I can see totally judging someone as a ***** because a) she drives a Prius, and b) she was putting premium in. Good call. <rolling eyes>

You guys better relax, or someone is gonna blow a cork. lol

See Bullfighter, YOU can make a pseudo-serious rant thread, but then you draw out all the throbbing vein in the forehead types who get all worked up over the silliest things. You should know better than to give crack laced candy to children. :D Shame on you.
