I'm looking at a F355 6 speed that will need an immediate major. If you are not restricted to yellow boxes. what specific components would you use - and what else would you do while you were in there?
Hill Engineering tensioners and throw out bearing?
    Any exhaust mods
clutch if less than half life

    What else?

285Ferrari reported his 355's OEM waterpump was bad at less than 9000 miles, so it's a cinch that the aftermarket 355 waterpump is superior quality to that.

Aftermarket fuel pressure regulators and O2 sensors are better quality than OEM, too.

Aftermarket airfilters like K&N or BMC are better than OEM, as well.

Obviously you want aftermarket exhaust headers on a 355! OEM 355 exhaust headers are crap.

Hyperflow cats are better than 355 OEM cats, by far.

Hill Engineering throw out bearing is vastly better than OEM.

I'm still undecided about that one. My old water pump lasted 13 years without problems and I've put an OEM back one in. However, I'll keep the ebay one and let you guys test it for a few years. :D

Hill's are a lot better. The OEM ones look like little toys in comparison.

Original ones on left and Hill engineering ones on the right.

Great pics of *tensioner* bearings, and yes, Hill Tensioners are better than Ferrari OEM ones.

Hill Engineering ***throw out bearings*** are likewise vastly superior to Ferrari OEM.

    Different beasts, though!

By the way, I compared the old and new cambelts and there was no stretch.

The old cambelt was "supposedly" put in 2 years ago.

Is water pump replacement an engine-out deal?

I'm just trying to make sure that I don't missing anything that should be done while the engine is out - or not put in superior after market parts or do some preventative maintenance. I included exhaust mods because the labor should be lower to install then than later... seems like the R&R for the exhaust is included -at least somewhat - in the major.

Anybody know how much QV charges to coat their headers?

I'm pretty sure you can get the waterpump out of the car while the engine is still in place... but you'll need a few sticks of C4 and a large open meadow. You might damage a few other things with this unconventional method. In fact, unless you have metal timing belt covers, I wouldn't suggest it.

I would replace ALL the rubber boot covers on all the AMP connectors in the engine compartment...at this point they should all be cracked, torn and crumbly. You will need the little tool to disassemble the connector in order to remove and install new boots. Rather than the original accordian style, I notice there are more durable (thicker) looking rubber replacements available now:

This outfit carries the tool, and the straight and 90 degree boots for the 2 and 3 pole connectors. Not sure where you go for the ones for the larger connectors...I'm sure Daniel at Ricambi can help you. ;)

If you are gonna yank the engine to change the belts anyway, don't worry about if you can do it with the engine in. But, on a 355 you don't need to take the engine out to change the water pump. The water pump does not run off of the timing belt the way it does on a 348. Again like I said, if you are yanking engine to changes the belts just do it then.

    Ernie -

It was kind of a joke... about using C4 to get the waterpump out. :)

One other thing which we did replace was the fuel filler top pipe. You can see it in the topof the picture below.

It had a lot of rust on it and for peace of mind I decided to replace it.

I also had a look at at one in a 355 and it was also begining to rust.
