I don't think anyone is saying he's better than MS or any of history's greats. What we're saying is that you can see the make-up of the next great champion in Lewis Hamilton. He's the total package inside and outside the cockpit. I can't even put my finger on it exactly, except to say that you tend to know greatness when you see it...even if it's all just potential right now.

    He's absolutely no Villeneuve.

    True.

But you know what: I'm getting a kick out of all the nay sayers re: Hamilton. They will be so wrong by the end of this season.

Only problem is: He will hurt our boys with his results.

Given the choice of a great 3 or 4-way battle to the championship or a replay of the monotonous 2004 Ferrari runaway season, I will take the racing action even if it is a McLaren driver that ultimately prevails. I am pretty sure that Kimi is going to pull it out but I am looking forward to down-to-the-wire racing.

Guys, please, the wheel bearings are about to collapse under the load - the bandwagon can't take many more people leaping onto it!

Yeah, and how many of you jumped all over the Nico Rosberg bandwagon a year ago ?

How many jumped on the Kimi bandwagon 5 years ago ? I'm still waiting..

As I said, Lewis may be GREAT, I said let's see what happens over the next 5 years.

IIRC, when Tiger turned pro, so did a guy named Sergio Garcia, and some thought Sergio was better... and some thought the same with a guy named Adam Scott...

i agree that Hamilton has the tools to succeed--and i'm quite happy to have a fresh face for F1. He's getting the most out of arriving at Mc at the right time, having a competitive car. But as i always say...Having the tools, and ultimately succeeding, are two different things--though the odds are better. Will he continue to pilot competitive cars? Will his team fall into a slump and halt his progression? We don't know! Alas...

NOTHING can be taken for granted. For those that have already put him up on the ultimate pedestal... remember that...

All of the naysayers. "He can only drive, can't really putt", "He'll soon find out what the pro tour is about", I remember he was admonished for going around saying that he hadn't really brought his "A game" yet and he was winning without it.

Then he went out there and dominated, if not with wins then with consistant top ten finishes if not top three finishes. Then he took a step back, some called it a slump, but he revamped his swing from the ground up.

So now, we have Hamilton here who much like Tiger was built from the ground up to do this one thing. Cocooned and prepared.

understood. only thing diff is that Lewis drives within a team...he's dependent upon them to give him a competitive car...

Very true but I just don't see McLaren screwing this up for him. He's been under development with them too long.

And lets not forget Jenson Button....He was going everywhere. Lewis is doing well but other than a good start in one Race, he has not done anything spectacular. I love the guy though and I hope he does well. Could you imagine MS's record if he had started his career in a top car like Lewis has?

You mean other than start his F1 career with an unprecedented four straight podium finishes?!?

Can you imagine the records that MS would still be chasing had Senna not died?

No not really. Other than most wins as a Brazilians, most wins not in a Ferrari, and most poles.

Not sure about that. You realize he was in negotiations with the Scuderia? The movie "La Passione" even has a dream sequence where he sits in a Ferrari F1.

Nobody knows where his career would have taken him. He might have retired after his year(s) with Williams or switched to Ferrari for 95 or 96. In a parallel universe he might have taken on the role MS did at Ferrari and MS would have eventually gone from Benetton to his Mercedes friends at McLaren. Who knows.

I didn't know that. I think I heard somewhere that he said that his dream car would be a Ferrari.

Both Luca and Todt were chasing to have him in the Ferrari starting in 96 and he told his Girlfriend at the time that would be the final team he would drive for before hanging it up.

I still think he will be the outstanding talent over the next decade and he will eclipse both Alonso and Kimi. Not sure if anyone will ever eclipse the records of MS as that was a very unique situation in F1.
