I've been telling everyone this for weeks now, and the subject keeps coming up. I'm not saying other SUVs aren't capable off-road, but the fact is, as of right now, only Jeeps are trail-rated. The Jeeps are put through a rigorous testing to earn this, and I just think people need to be aware that there is a difference.

    Does it matter? Seriously?

99.9% of folks will never be off pavement. Living in Wisconsin, I occasionally drive on a dirt road...

What manufacturers should do is have SUV's:

    a) Snow Rated. Will this puppy drive over the 4 foot mound the plow driver just left at the edge of your driveway? Or will it high side on it?

    b) High way stability rated. Does it skip around from lane to lane in a 10 mph gust? Is it in the other lane of trafic when an 18 wheeler zooms buy?

    c) Testosterone rated. Does it look manly? Or is it made by Subaru? ;) Will your friends laugh at you? Will women find it cute? Some consumers can't think through this themselves.

    etc...

Trail rated, really only matters to the .001% of the population that eats granola bars for breakfast, drinks cow's milk straight from the udder, and lives in a log cabin which is solar powered :) .

And, I happen to like Jeeps :).

Isn't "Trail Rated" something that was DESIGNED by Jeep? Sort of like that radar detector testing groups that's owned by Escort? It would make sense that only Jeeps are trail rated if Jeep owns the trail rating criteria.

Like the criteria is that it has to say Jeep on it? At first I wasn't so sure it was a joke but now I'm pretty confident...you're joking right husker? :D

So you weren't being sarcastic? Wow! You really don't get what it's all about?

Jeep made up the "trail rated" thing. No other vehicle will ever be "trail rated" because it's something that Jeep made up. BMW has VANOS (their variable cam timing). Honda has VTEC. Nissan has NCVS. Porsche has Variocam.

If a BMW salesman tells you the BMW is better because it's the only one that has VANOS, does it mean its better? Or does it mean it's the only one with VANOS because BMW is the only one who uses that term?

The only reason Jeep's alone are "trail rated" are because it's a term made up by Jeep. There is no test that a Jeep can pass that another vehicle can not. There is no other vehicle other than Jeep that has been tested to see if it will be "trail rated" and has failed.

I can't believe you actually believe "Trail rated" means something, do you? You've got to be messing around with us, right?

I hope so, or else we're going to bestow your posts on the subject with a "retard rated" - no other post will ever qualify, because it will be a rating system that is only ever applied to you! ;)

But not even all Jeeps get to be Trail Rated. It's a special designation that is only applied to the best in the Jeep lineup.

That's what the sales guy was pointing out to us, too. If it was just a marketing thing, they'd trail rate ALL the jeeps. Good point Snake.

I think the only logical thing to do is ask them to put you in a new Vesuvius Orange Hyundai and settle for a few less cup holders ;)

No problem. I didn't want people to be misled into thinking that ANY Jeep was Trail Rated. Jeep is very particular about which vehicles get the designation, so customers will know that it's not just a bunch of marketing hype.

What gets me is, over and over you try to tell people this stuff, and they just blow it off. "Ahh that's just a bunch of marketing, etc." Get on here and act all big shot. They'll find out who was telling the truth soon enough. It doesn't even make any sense that they would just make up stuff like trail rated. Oh well.

OK guys, I'm going to go over this one more time - hopefully it will sink in.

ONLY JEEPS ARE TRAIL RATED. PERIOD. END OF STORY. I went with a friend of mine to look at both Jeeps and Highlanders, and the Jeep salesman said, as of right now, only Jeeps are trail rated. Jeep got tired of other SUV makers misrepresenting that their units were trail rated. I'm not saying a RR couldn't do a decent job off-road; it's simply not trail rated. According to the Jeep salesman, Jeep is doing this as a public service because a number of other SUV makers are out there touting their own makes, when they really aren't trail rated. What's funny is I looked at Consumer Reports, and sure enough, they fail to mention that some of these other SUVs aren't trail rated. It makes me wonder who might be greasing their palms. But if you don't believe me go to www.consumerreports.com and find out for yourself.

Would you guys just wake up and smell the coffee?

My Range Rover left us stranded three times on the highway: front differential failure and two electrical issues. Who in their right mind would take one on a "trail" where a flatbed could not easily get to it? Helicopter it out? They are too fragile for city driving, much less off-road. The only place Range Rovers belong is on a rap video. Sorry ,just calling a dog a dog.

Thanks, I hate to admit it but I watch for threads about rangeys so I can try and make myself laugh about my experiences with mine. I hope i am not getting a reputation. I will say even my wife finally broke down and admitted we never had near the problems with any Ferrari like we did the rover. Maybe we need to try a Maserati BiTurbo...

jeeps are only "trail rated" on the left side. no badge on the right side of the vehicle.....does this mean the right side tires cannot go off road????
