Thanks man!!!! I just spoke to Mike McCord at Friction Materials Co. He said that they could do it all, reline disks, machine flywheel, rebuild pressure plate, replace bearings, and stuff it all back together to factory specs. I am boxing everything up tonight and shipping it out tomorrow with a copy of the WSM (clutch section) just in case they need it.

BTW...they were very reasonable (<$500) in their estimate.

    J -

Insure the living crap out of that package. The flywheels are NLA from Ferrari currently, and the last one I had was almost $3000 if I remember correctly. Pack, pack, pack. Tape, tape, tape.

When he sends it back, make certain the insurance is equally jacked.

Think stuff never happens? I had a $700 512TR gear fall out of a package this week where the corner got cut on the FedEx equipment. The gear is gone. Bye bye.

Thanks for looking out for me. I am insuring the package for $10k mainly because I am shipping the whole flywheel housing to them. They are tearing it apart and replaceing everything. Hopefully I won't have to make a claim. :) The bell housing was only sold as a complete kit according to the spare parts manual.

Will the 355 flywheel work in the 348?

Ha ha ha..... All I can do is laugh at this point.....I got the call today that my clutch is back together and ready to ship out. Imagine my surprise when I heard the bill was $900(Including fifty bucks for insurance and freight). Quite a ways off from $3-400 I was quoted over the phone. Not sure what to think about it right now... But, I should be back on the road soon...

Yep. They had the clutch for a week and a half during which I called four times for status (Originally told a 2-3 day turn around). They had several opportunities to inform me of any changes.

Oh well, Once I get behind the wheel again it will all be worth it ... :)

Amazing...what did they do to your system? I use these guys all the time with no probs but you must be very specfic with what you ask. They can reline surfaces no prob and cheap! Last time 15 bucks for organic on 348 discs. They do not know what to do with voight damped flywheel packs. I think you got dinged because they saw your unit and sent it to someone else and they acted as middle men because they had no clue. I use them all the time because they are cheap but you need to know what is going on because they don't.

Well, I had a phone conversation with the guy before I sent the clutch to them. He said that they had done 348 clutches before and gave me the estimate. I sent a letter along with the package stating what was to be done, as well as a copy of the WSM pertaining to the clutch. It was a simple re-line, machine the flat parts, and reassemble to spec. I had pretty much dumbed it down to the simplest form possible, or so I thought. The explaination that I was given in the end for the higher cost was that the disk materials were $200 per disk, plus labor. I asked if that was kevlar...he said no.

Anyway, we will see how it looks when I get it back. If it performs well I will just send the disks next time and have a local shop do the machine work.

Well i hope it works. It sounds like they put the screws to you. The disc material is nothing special and is the same stuff used for any organic application. Lucky I am able to go in person and look them in the eye and tell them what to do and not to give me any BS! That is just so wrong! They deserve a lot less business.

Well, if they had not had five grand of MY Ferrari parts in California I would have told them to go pound sand. But they kind of had me by the short ones.. LOL... :)
