The battery in my '78 308GTS seemed a little unsafe with the factory
single screw down plate. Not all batteries have an indent groove or a
ridge built into the battery case for the screw down plate to take hold
of. My solution was to take a sturdy belt and shortened the length to
fit neatly under the metal factory battery tray. I took a leather punch
and cut new holes for the belt buckle to secure a snug but neat fit. Now,
when navigating those exciting North Cascade Mountain roads I don't have
to be distracted by thoughts of my battery bouncing from side to side.
The Pacific Northwest and B.C. in particular have some wonderful roads
    to exercise your Ferrari.

My 86 328 GTB has a screw-down plate but as the last respondent mentioned it isn't necessarily the most effective way to secure the battery although I have not yet had a problem. I like his idea, essentially a belt around the bottom plate and battery...simple, effective, and safe!
