I hate to sound like a party pooper and while I think this is really cool, it seems like these guys could have a legal problem no? Since they have documentation of the whole thing witnessed by people that could be called to testify, and since the average speed is about 88 MPH, can't they be prosecuted by any or all of the muncipalities that they traveled through?? Or by the Federal Government?? These interviews and the witnesses that have verified all of this could be used against them no? If some municipality charged them, they would have trouble prosecuting these guys because they wouldn't be able to prove that they were actually speeding in that municipality... ...but couldn't the Feds charge them since in totality, they would have had to been speeding and the crime occurred in numerous states? Or are these guys safe? They have confessed to crimes and there is supporting documentation right? Any legal opinions about this out there?

Thats mean ;) As far as I know those Jags were tough old broads. If it were done today I don't think it would have the same "zing" as a Ferrari driving it.

    Cool link

If I did this record it would have to be a car that I did not care about. Infact (just as in Gumball) I would buy a Ferrari specifically for the event I was about to embark on. It cant be a car that you cherish because lets face it, afterwards she will need a bit of mechanical TLC, not to mention a few little paint touch ups. Not to mention the fact you could have it impounded or crashed. I'd say gizmo the thing out. Radar here, jammer there, GPS, and I liked the idea about the switch to turn off the rear lights... It would have to be sort of a purpose build machine for this day and age.

I was driving from DC to the beach last summer in an 06 BMW 5-Series. I had a Valentine (you cant drive a fast car without one), but stayed in the longer sections between Easton and Ocean City MD at around 120. It was a friends car and after I was all tough about my drive, he told me that he flew by a cop at the rev-limiter. Said the cop turned on his lights and began to pull out but digressed. That leads me to my next idea....

Am I the only person that hears this sort of record and thinks Bugatti? Top speed does not mean everything on a trip like this though. You need good MPG and a solid average speed. However, if all this was so, opening up the Veyron on the wide-open bits may be the lip needed to get under that 30H mark.

Thats it, I'm pumped! I'm taking the Jetta to Cali!!! NewYork to CA in.... .... .... fall!

I have spoken with a few people with legal backgrounds about this as it got me thinking... We basically agreed that these guys are fools if they want to brag this up... 1979 is a lot different than 2007. We are a lot more of a litigious society than we were in the 1970's.... There are a ton of prosecutors including Federal prosecutors maybe? that might see a case here.... I would be laying low if I were these guys or they could have some problems....

Eh, I dunno....Brock Yates never shyed away from publicity about what he was doing when his magazine covered the Race. The burden of proof would have to lie with the State demonstrating where, exactly, the law was being broken and in which state - there is no 'National' speed limit, per se, only the states regulate that. Therefore, the States would have to prove where/when their individual law was broken, and an 'average speed' across the whole country does not satisfy that burden of proof.

The Feds could prosecute for reckless endangerment or something... I acknowledge that a State would have a tough time proving it but they were crossing State lines making a Fed case possible... Potentially, the government could argue that they are violating Federal statutes not having to do specifically with driving which as you point out is handled by the states respectively...but surely there is a Federal law for such an offense... They could verify all of the speed limits on their route and work out that they broke the law and it was impossible for them not to have...in my opinion.

"Those guys are more juiced up then that Ferrari" LOL
I forgot how funny that movie is.

And I forgot that Jackie Chan was in it too. I got to see if I can find it on DVD. What ever happened to Hal Needham anyway? I seem to recall he died during a stunt for one of his movies? is that right?

What would the fed's charge them with? Come on now. I don't know of ANY federal statute that was violated. Local Law Enforcement has to WITNESS an offense to charge them. The fact that they have documentation that they did it is (IMHO) a 5th amendment issue where they would have to incriminate themselves and they could fight having to give up any "Evidence" they produced themselves. If the locals have them on Speed cam ripping past a radar then they will be sent a ticket. They will have to either pay the ticket or go to court.

Doing it Solo, one car with NO stickers is the only way to do it. These guys are smart doing it "under the Radar" like this. If it was announced they were going to try it it would have looked like the last road section in CannonBall with hundreds of cops with radar guns and them at 55mph

I could say that I know a guy who ran a mile in 2 minutes, but that doesn't mean it is true. Unless I show you video or any other evidence that proves it to be true, then there is no way you would believe me.

And I know because I am the one that bet them.

    http://www.bullrun2007.com/

This link will take you to the four (4) part video of Dennis and Richard talking about the NY-LA drive. All of the receipts, gps print outs, cell phone logs (that show where the calls where made from, what tower and time) along with other records (gas, E-Z Pass, etc.) have been witnessed and reviewed by Bullrun officials, as well as Allen Tayler from Car & Driver (who happened to be on Bullrun with us and witnessed the bet from start to finish). Moreover, the video from the three (3) onboard cameras (15-20 tapes) has been watched by several people and attested to.
I am certin everyone will be reading about this soon in numerous publications as there were so many press people on Bullrun with us.
Besides, I wouldn't have paid the bet if this was BS.

    Respectfully,
    Jared J. Riecke
