http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170116156802 Worth it to put an engine in or parts car?
Looks too nice for a parts car. It might be a nice place for a v12 or a twin turbo 355. The price is a bit high for me considering no engine or trans. I'm thinking maybe $15K
see http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=145879 for an earlier discussion of this car, before it was separated from the motor. I actually have part of it sitting on my desk
That's funny - I bought a little piece of it too - I think the engine must be spread out all over the country by now.
There are SEVERAL complete drivetrains lying around out there to drop-in and drive - Symbolic was using one as a static display model last time I was there...Ted Rutlands probably has several, etc. I'm sure there are/were dozens of wrecked 328s out there that can donate the necessary drivetrain. If this car has no accident history, then you have a terrific project - any mechanic familiar with a 328's 30K engine-out service can re-install a fresh mill inside of a week......no b.s. If the math works out in such a way you're comfortable with, do it. I would factor in labor/parts before making an offer, but.....you know this, and so should the seller if he's reasonable. I wouldn't worry about not having a matching-numbers car - big deal. Its not a particularly collectible model.
That car would be a perfect canidate for one of the electric Fiero conversions? Or would that be considered sacrilege??
I still don't get why this car had to be separated. it could have been put together by a someone with the knowhow. but now it's going to cost at least 15k to back to running. at that point drop in a V12 and have some fun, or do a 288 GTO.
For the cost of a V-12, the fabrication needed to mate such a beast to a decent gearbox capable of handling the HP/Torque numbers, route cooling to it, mod the fuel pumps, radiator, etc. etc. you might as well buy a new Crate 3.2 litre engine and have a correct car for less money and headache. The hard part about this project is someone doing the math and finding a used engine/gearbox that purchase of all three pieces comes under $48K. I think it can be done.....if someone is willing to do some homework and make a few phone calls.
oh yeah the V12 would cost exponentially more money but since the cars been separated it's an option. a new motor and gear box not mention what ever else is missing EFI etc.. well it's MFI but it still looks like it needs it. it's going to be costly, I'd source a 328 engine/gearbox and rebuild it and swap over to EFI. i'd go further and bolt on a SC and shoot for 600hp but that's only if i could get the car for $15k.
