You do not own the copyright to others' photos or any other type of intellectual property displayed publicly. Dave's CD does not consist of photos he has shot, but of photos others have shot and he has 'just taken', without permission, without referencing, without crediting. Simply put - Dave is taking credit and money for what is largely others' work. In this day and age when all it takes is an email to obtain permission, the thought didn't even cross his mind. That is unfortunate as it would have increased the quality, integrity, _longevity_ and very nature of 'his' product. If he intended to share the database publicly, perhaps I could understand his current approach. But if your intention is to sell and claim that it is solely the fruit of your labor, you should absolutely ensure that what you are selling is yours. Dave's CD is saturated with data from the GT/4 public databases. He has not referenced nor credited any of these sources, which others have compiled for years. That is in very bad taste. - Copyright and patent laws exist to protect precisely those works which are displayed publicly. By posting something publicly one is not relinquishing any rights to one's intellectual property. Period. Defending Dave's right to pillage is obscene, and I suspect those arguing for the right to pillage, would be the very first to cry foul if their property was 'just taken' and violated - this is typically the case. I suspect Dave wouldn't be smiling if one of the advocates of pillaging rights posted his CD publicly without permission. Even if Dave's CD did not infringe copyright laws, it is an affront to others' work and collaborative efforts. You do not take what everyone has contributed to for years, repackage it, fill in a gap or two, put your name on it, and try to sell it back to those who authored most of it and who own the IP rights to the majority of it. .... a child comprehends this. Thanks, couldn't have done it without the help and encouragement of a lot of the guys here. I had trouble with the "read me" file once, did it open ok for you? Its an interesting read isn't it? One thing I noticed. The customer service level at FAF in Atlanta must be amazing because thier customers sure are loyal. They sold and re-sold quite a few cars. There are a few cars they had 3 or 4 times.
Sounds like a great rebuttal to his arguments on copyright laws. I know his views are unpopular, but at $25 a pop dstacy is making this a commercial venture, making money from his time. Maybe the whole CD is fine in the copyright department, did I miss dstacy's clarification on that?
Factory records? You mean they actually kept records? Oh Tex you silly boy. As far as the amateur collectors, true. Nobody had all the cars on thier list. Not me, not the registries, other database hounds, not even the T group here. Ok here is the best part......after acting like a data entry clerk and typing in all the info from mounds of scraps of paper, notes, and print outs I think I finally have them all in one place. This info can't die so I send it to the registries, the T group, and anyone who had a database. Now we all have all the cars. WRONG! I get a PM from an Fchatter 2 days ago who tells me he just bought a GT4 and gives me the serial number. You guessed it, nobody knew this car was out there. <sigh> We're getting closer, one of these days we'll have them all.
Yes Brian, it is all public information. As far as a commercial venture is concerned; I always shared whatever info I had on any specific car whenever anyone has asked. If someone wants every car in a printable format, yep they get to buy me a very nice lunch. If they don't want to do that its no big deal, they can type thier own list. A few people do and enjoy doing it. I thought it was kind of fun doing it.
Imported? Don't know. Still at the house, the database is at the winery. Give me a couple of hours and I'll let you know how many I have on the list.
worked great for me, i would have given you lots of close up pics of my series one to use however you wanted, there were only a few things really modified on it. pics are always helpful to other when trying to keep these things running. i am exempt from emissions and inspections here, and had all the air pumps and crap off of 4 308's. finally threw it all away as no one needs it here. guess i should have Ebayed the stuff!
Yea, you should not have ditched those pumps air rails and valving....although they are very old components by now. Marie in California could have used it! And when you find those amber front lenses, well you know..... The Factory DOES have some records as I have registered my cars with them, in the My Garage section of the site... You know like Napolis......
see i agree with the way you put it, but that guy was following Dstacy around and nagging him about things, i kept finding his posts following Dstacy's as i was hunting info on that white gt4 in NY and other series one cars using the search feature. its not like i saw that one post and flipped out. yes, i agree there may be some rules or laws that pertain to what he is doing , and how he is doing it. i just dont give a ****. i can use the info, period. its one thing to ask or call attention to the facts that there may be issues with selling the info gathered. its the following around from thread to thread like the kid in "Goonies" with the "two dollars" that bothered me. sorry ? that some here feel they had to " stop coming to F chat "because of me or this thread. i also could care less. subscribe and pay to play, or get out. these are just cars. exchanging the data is better than keeping it to ones self. 6000 posts on here, and how much is my time worth based on all the stuff i have found and written? i dont know, i did it to help others, i dont even know, but that have a similar passion, for Ferrari and Lamborghini. so dont anyone cry to me that its not fair to form a data base, that will only appeal to owners and enthusiasts anyway. the crybabies can stay out and the rest of us will be better for it. rant over. be glad i never volunteered to be a Moderator.

Dave, Acknowledge other people's work, obtain permission for copyrighted material _before_ you twist it in whatever shape suits you, and no one will bother you. Period. You should know better. As it is, you are taking credit for what is largely others' work. Take this - http://www.dinoregister.com/ This man donated his entire life time collection publicly. For you to pillage it is wrong, any which way you wish to view it. You are completely and perfectly entitled to do that. If you came up with an improved organization of the public databases, you should sell that _organization method_, not the data. It is illegal for you to sell others' copyrighted material, but it is not illegal for you to _point_ to it. A suitable analogy is Google. Google authors nothing yet presents the world's digital information in an intuitive and useful manner. If Google adopted your current approach it would be out of business tomorrow. But Google does not claim authorship of the data. In only supplies the interface to the data. I think a similar approach would suit your project better, and would bypass the legal ramifications which you'll always bang your head against. This assumes you wish to sell your project. As I said before, money can't be it. You would get more of what you want going the public route. But, naturally, this is your decision to make. Best
