As I think many of you know the 430 Challenge is a race car thats supposed to travel to the race track on a trailer....

Well in days gone by customers would drive their 250 GTO's to the track, drive their 250 LM's to the track so it was with this in mind and with the spirit of the first Ferraris that last Sunday we drove a Challenge to the track.

The scene was set with my mate and I travelling to where the challenge is kept, 7am, top down in the 430 spider, not one car on the road, the sound of the V8 as we raced through the CBD, this I must admit was a very, very nice way to start the day!

Seeing the Challenge parked in the street, the early morning sun glinting off its curves, those huge wheels filling the arches was a thrilling experience, in many ways this was like going back in time to the days when race cars were driven on the road....

Following the Challenge in the 430 Spider was a unique experience, the sun rising, clear roads in the CBD and within 5 minutes we were driving "enthusiastically" towards the track, the sound of the two cars echoing though the CBD, the astonishment of the few motorists we did pass.

Driving along the sea front, the sun rising, behind us the unmistakable sight of Table Mountain, the sight and sound of the Challenge being very unique, had a few runs with the 430 spider and yes the challenge was quicker even though its being run in and hence the revs are being limited to 7000rpm.

As expected the car was incredible on the track......words cannot desrcibe...

Nice pictures! It is interesting that you're able to do that in South Africa... here, you couldn't drive 10km with such a racing car without being stopped by the police, dragged out of the cockpit and being sued to death...

    Jacques,

Is there any way you can produce a soundfile of the exhaust ?? I have yet to hear a 430 Challenge car other than idling ..and am curious as i was told it doesnt sound as good as the road car.

At the moment the car is being limited to 7000 rpm so sound isnt really representative if what the car does sound like, will upload a small video clip....on the road is sounds superb, much louder than the std 430, much more urgent sounding......

    Will post clip shortly...

Well this was very early in the morning and here in SA you sometimes dont see the traffic police for days and when you do they usually are more interested in looking at the car, though some do have a chip on their shoulder. We took a huge chance, the car is unlicensed(cant licence a LHD car in SA).

Was an amazing experience....of course as illustrated by the death trap taxi picture there are other risks that one can come accross...

    Jacques,

Thanks for the story... what's the CBD, a local highway?

People here get stopped by the police with Capistro Level III's, so I doubt we'd get very far with a Challange car!

Love to see video of the car on the track... did you take any?

    Best,
    Frank

its real quiet. The 360 C sounds better. Alot of tracks have (stupid) noise restrictions.

I was thinking about this, say you owned a street F430, and also a F430 Challange car. If you put the street F430 plate on the challange car to drive on the street, even if a cop pulls you over and looks up the plate, how is he going to know it isn't a street car? They never check your VIN when they pull you over.

I would think it depends on how far they want to investigate. It's pretty obvious from the interior that a Challenge car doesn't belong on the street, not to mention the exhaust noise. But if they just did a cursory glance-over, you could probably get away with it. Slicks aren't legal on public roads, so that might be a problem. You'd also want to have the legal 430's registration with you as well. All points considered, given a chance to drive a Challenge car on the street, I would take it :D

    Just don't crash it.

Thats the exact scenario in this case but its complicated by the fact that here in SA we cant register new LHD cars.....here we are also required to display a licence disk but assuming you took the disk off the street 430 one would probably be able to pull this off......

Interestingly all the Challenge car that have been allocated to SA arrived on Pirelli Corsa Road tyres...not slicks.......this whole episode at least shows there are some advantages when living in Africa.....

same as the 360C. It was delivered on street tires. All of them were. That was a real problem as we had a test day..on street tires. ouch.

What was interesting to was doing a back to back seat of the pants assessement of the 430C vs the road going 430 spider, really its night and day, as my friend said there really is not comparison between the two cars, the 430 spider is still an awesome car but the Challenge is just at another level when it comes to handling and grip and that with the Pirelli Corsa's, would imagine slicks would make this differance even more marked....
