Specifically, I am interested in the struts front/back for an early Testarossa (1986), but maybe the question is of interest for other model owners, too...

I wondered if it is possible to have these rebuilt somewhere to eliminate the sagging hatch problem. I am ashamed to be going around with a piece of PVC pipe to prop up the covers.

As an alternative, somebody told me it may be possible to buy a non-Ferrari specific replacement or have one custom made to your needed lengths.

Anybody have experience with such a thing, or is the real Ferrari part inexpensive enough to just use them?

    Thanks, James

Yeah James there is. I'm not sure for a Testarossa but for the 348 Sachs makes the struts for the engine deck lid. The Sachs part number for the 348/355's is SG437007. Maybe your Testarossa uses the same ones??? Or, you can take your old struts and have them matched up at the parts store. The only thing is that is won't have the little horsey printed on it.

Thanks, well at least I could measure mine and see. I spent just about 2 hours already doing web searches and almost everything comes back with suspension struts, not the hood support kind.

Norwoods is supposed to call me back later, so if they know of one I will post it back.

Well, who would have guessed that. I probably would have just measured one of them and tried to find two alike. I guess it makes sense if the mounting points are a little different - sort of. I am going to find out what Ferrari charges just for the informational value, too.

    Thanks, James

Ricambi sells them for $86.70. Bought my 348 struts from Ricambi. Correct parts, fast shipping and excellent service.

One thing I think I noted before was that RockAuto didn't have the TR gas springs listed quite right for the different types (and I just confirmed they don't via the eurospares SPC):

If you have a euro (or early US?) TR without the CHMSL (a.k.a., the brakelight in the center), the PNs are different for each side, as NoDoubt listed, because you only need one with the electrical pass-thru connection on the RH side for the engine trouble lights), but

If you have a TR with the CHMSL, you need two with the electrical pass-thru connection (which I'd guess would be SG337001 since it's more expensive).

I don't think the mounting points are different side-to-side -- more likely that the added electrical bits for the isolated pass-thru connection somehow restrict the minimum compressed length -- just a swag (and I'm not looking into it deeper unless I have to ;)).

I am going to look tonight, but I do have the center brake light. I guess I can see if both sides have an electrical connection.
