Well I know about both.... Rolex you do buy for reliability... I've had mine for over 20 years and its never stop keeping time... not once.... so I think its money well spent. My timex and other cheap watches have either stopped working or just broken and I've thrown them away! so its not all about the Name... I think when something works so well and folks realize the value ... it becomes popular.

Now about Ferrari... well they aint reliable... like a Lexus or Rolex... so you dont buy them for that... performance? yes... style ... yes... Name ... Yes... Racing history... for me YES, more than anything else... Today more than ever Ferrari is all about luxury and supposed exclusivity..... but in Atlanta its not at all rare to see a Ferrari out in the wild... back in the 80's ... it was pretty rare... in the 70's it was like a space ship landed... so the rarity is kinda going away.

You used to buy a Ferrari for the driving pleasure and thrill of mastering a race bred machine... its kinda like that today... but most folks I think equate the Ferrar with success, and money more than anything else.

It's like the guys you see in fancy restaurants that have orderd a bottle of 1982 Petrus... and are smoking a cigar... cuban to be exact... who's kidding who... its all about the show... I think today there is a lot of that going on... but hey to each his own.

I would agree that most of the Fchat guys I've met are car guys... and like mechanical stuff... that's me, and I like well crafted stuff... that's certainly a Ferrari... its far from perfect, but there is no doubt that it was specially made, for one purpose... to get you from A to B as fast as you are brave! you can worry about repairs after the Barolo!

WoW. Don`t know about the new BMWs other than they are UGLY. I have had a BMW for a daily driver for almost 20 years now. I think they ( BMW ) are the best all round cars. At least the models I have owned ( 80 320i, 97 328i, 90 525i, 2000 M5, 97 528i ( current ) 99 M3 ( current ). It`s going to be tough to name drop with almost any car in the near future, because all the car companies are pushing out as many as they can. BMW, Audi and MB everywhere around here. They have to to stay in business. Tough competition these days. Is`nt Ferrari building a lot more cars than they were in the 80s and 90s?

i think a bmw is something to start into the exotic car world and its a great car to drive. maybe some dont look to great but i think for all around they look awsome. maybe not a ferrari style but they also cost 60k and not 170k =/ anyway i like bmw. some people dont and some people see it as a poor attempt at appearing rich but not to me. a bmw can be a car to go fast in or to look great in. my brother has a 97 m3 and that thing is amazing. its fun and looks awsome. granted i havent rode in very many ferraris so i wouldent know what its like to ride in a 360 or 430, but to me u cant go wrong buying a bmw

as far as buying a ferrari for the name.. i cant imagine anyone doing it but u know theres that superstar out there that wants a ferrari and maserati and god knows what else just to go.. "i have one u dont" sort of thing. i think its dumb to buy a car for that but i was just wonderin.

I guess we should also point out that there are fanboi s everywhere for anything.

Remember Enzo Ferrari's motto. He builds street cars to support the race program. So wh0ring the name? maybe since road F-cars are not competitive at all. You can drive a Porsche everyday and whip aroind a track too. Fcars bottom out in parking lots. And respect aside, I loathe P-cars.

Hold up right there buddy! "start into the exotic car world"??? How do you come to that association?
Well it rides better than a Crown Victoria, but "great" is not the word.

Well, I shurely did'n buy it just for the name, but its part of it.
My first "real" sports car was the 944 I still own. Since its red and does not instantly look like I Porsche its VERY often confused with a Ferrari, even by drivers (Even a F430 Spider driver onve greeted me). Now having a real Ferrari is often funny. When I hear someone scream on the 944 "Oh look, a Ferrari" I can say, "No, my Ferrari is black" ;-) Takes a lot of fun into ownership and noone ever will assume again that I have a 944 because I can't afford a 911. Which makes ownership of the 944 much more pleasent (you need to be confident to own and drive one). But shurely I would never have bought it for the previous named benefits. The most annoing pont to FChat attendendts would be: It provides the fun a Cayman S gives for half the price and no more deprecation (and looks even better)

We bought the Ferrari not just because of its name but also everything it has.. the sounds, looks, performance, and the prestige it brings. Nothing else compares.

I really don't want to get into a giant argument with you, but what the hell are you talking about? Please name a car that IS a better all round car than BMW. What is your daily driver? Who said anything about Porsche?

I said something about Porsche saying that over all they are better than Fcars on road and track, as for better than a BMW, if I have to explain it to you, you have not driven enough variety of cars to get my point. My daily drivers have nothing to do with the topic. This is not cross examination in a courtroom, just a talk about brand.

My point is and has always been brand identity has always allowed people to look beyond shortcomings of vehicle lines. I remember my 850csi and my neighbors 308. Both cars were always in the shop for some reason or another. When people would ask where the cars were, they'd laugh at me for getting a German lemon, yet because the other car was a Ferrari, people just figured it was par for the course and thought nothing of it.

People lined up for Range Rovers even with the worst rating for SUV reliability from Consumer Reports.

You brought up a good point for discussion.

*Disclaimer--I'm really struggling with your grammar, but I'll let it go. I know I'm nowhere near the smartest man on this earth, but I always shudder whenever I see examples of how internet/blog/texting culture has destroyed language skills. I'm assuming you're still young, because no grown person outside of the rap industry thinks spelling like a lazy 3rd grader is cool. That said...

The supercar market is as over-heated as the real estate market. Nearly every manufacturer has thrown their hat into the $100K+ two-seater market, and we're at the point where it's unlikely street cars will be able to get much quicker. It's great to have choices, and every camp stakes their claim as to why their marque is the better choice. But at the end of the day, Ferrari still creates the sexiest automobiles on earth. And five, ten, fifty years from now, they'll still be at it. Unlike many of the current makes.

I get brand identity just fine. You`re the one that said BMWs are junk. People have to drive something. So whatever company does a better job of advertising wins. Just like the big three did in the 80s and 90s. I think we can all agree their cars are junk. BMW 3 series won best car for 10 strait years. So they use that in their advertising. Maybe BMW are building junk now, if so, it will catch up with them. As far as driving enough cars to get your point, I`ve driven ( owned ) everything from a 67 427 435hp vette to a 2000 M5, and more. I`m no rookie.

For the rush you get pumping 500 ponies with the screaming engine behind you, sometimes you just yell your ass off while punching down on that accelerator. As for the name it could have been anything else. (maybe)
