If I remember right it was a '84 or a '85. The engine and tranny were fine but the interior needed a little work. Plus it needed new brakes. The cost would have added up pretty quick. Nice car though.

My old Alfa Spider got a lot of attention that way. A few people thought it was a Ferrari (funny, because I owned it in grad school... not exactly a place filled with Ferrari owners) and more than a few fellow students/faculty wondered aloud about my trust fund (after all, who else could afford an Italian sports car?).

All that over a car that cost $1200.

    Love reading the replies... :)

I wasn't looking for a car to make my wife "look rich," she can take out cars we already have to do that. None of her associates know whats in our garage...all they see is the minivan.

Being succesful in a smaller town is a quandry of sorts. Being a doctor doesn't help.

If you are a doc, people assume you have tons of money, which may or not be true. You can't really display any of your nicer things, because people percieve it negatively. So, ironic point #1: If you are successful, you really shouldn't show it.

Ironic reality #2: So, now you start living by that mantra. You go to Walmart where no one knows you, or your career, etc. The clerks start to show you were the damaged cans are to save you money :) ... You go to the autodealer to buy a car, such as a minivan. You keep telling the sales guy you are paying cash... He ignores you and keeps talking about loans...

As is frequently typical, most of the folks we know who are quite wealthy don't look it.

My wife is looking for a cool summer toy...and I get to drive it too! I would love to get a sub $5000 928 - But I haven't seen many. We have already had a 944, which I miss. A local dealer is selling a 1968 Mercedes 250 sedan, for $4000. I might go see that. It looks cool, but isn't really a car I yearn after...

I tried to talk my wife into a mondial/308 (I still would love to own each at one point or another)...she said if I get one with an automatic she would drive it :) ....... So, should I look for a mondial with a valeo clutch? If it breaks, it probably a nice paperweight :).

Then she mentioned getting a boxster...again. We had one years ago (2000s), which she never drove. She now thinks she might. I have seen 99's for as little as $15,000...

The sad thing is, my wife's cars in her youth were sticks. She apparantly does quite well with them, but doesn't enjoy it. In the proverbial words of every wife "Why would anyone want to drive a stick?"

Jaguars are good for this. XJ6/8's (Series III, X300, X308 - avoid XJ40's) look like a million bucks buck can be had cheap.

Not too bad to service either.

    best,
    dsd

When I was in residency my fav professor warned me against practicing in a small town.

He related the scandal one of his friends had to endure, where, upon returning from a cruise, the friend's wife washed 2 weeks worth of clothes, hung them on the clothes line (it's an old story) and the next day the word was circulating around town that the Doc owned 13 shirts! How decedent!

Viper GTS. Cheaper than a new Vette and they are extremely rare (yet lots of people know what they are). I don't think it's been mentioned yet.

No, there's a 928 with "Scarface" painted on the hood. It's actually the worst airbrushing, or whatever, job I've ever seen on a car. Looks hideous.

For an Automatic, if you take the time to find a nice 928, not a bad choice. A 944 with an automatic is a dog performance wise, the US version has a restricted low end for emissions, combined with a three speed...

What about a kit car, or do you not have time? I'm sure you could find something fun, and have an automatic.
