    * The connector is factory , the purpose could be several. Like you stated, if the car will sit for long periods of time, it would protect the battery from draining(clock and stereo always pull current) . It could also be there for Ferrari mechanics to disconnect, before working on your car. (without having to remove the spare tire to get to the battery)
The third reason I could think of is electrical fire due to the notorious fuseblocks overheating. It only takes a few seconds to pop the front hood (bonnet?) and pull the disconnect plug. I've used it several times when working on the electrical system. Access to it is very easy.

The fancy stuff for the 84/85 QV I looked up was available & spendy, it was on the alternator page. The old school version looked like it wasn't available anymore.

Thanks. It looks like the QV cables aren't actually available from Ferrari UK, not that I'd want to pay those prices for them anyway. But at least I've got some part numbers now (115660,115667). Ricambi lists one on their website for a ridiculous price but not the other. Anyway, I can start making phone calls and see what I can find.

Oh, OK, I didn't go any further than noticing that it was listed, I figured that meant it was available. I still say go to your local auto parts store and grab a generic battery ground cable and go!

Yeah, I'm sure I'll end up there. But I figure I ought to at least try to put it back to factory first.

Mine did not have it on my 308 when I bought it I think the previous owner took it off, so I called Trutland and got it (used) in two days. This really helps alot specially everytime you park your car in the garage, I was just getting too tierd
removing the spare tire everytime I need to disconnect the battery cable. So if you don't have quick disconnect then try or by one of this it can be mounted anywhere. It may not be a bad idea to mount it somewhere in the cockpit for quick and easy access.
