Got a Nintento Wii? It's physically active, and lets multiplayer happen. 4 player Wii tennis is fun. Does she have lots of friends? At that age friends are the most important thing. Girls love to talk and share ideas. fwiw - i asked my sister, she's 16. Let me know if you want me to ask her anything else. Not to pry either but where is mom? My cousin is 12 and she sticks to her mom like ... butter on toast. She's involved in lots of dance. She plays basketball with me and the rest of my cousins, she'll just shoot around, we lower the goal for her and we'll pick her up so she can dunk, she likes that. At least around here, most camps / sports are always based on popularity. Popularity is easily influenced by confidence and very little else. If you're going to put her in a 3 day camp, make sure she has at least a buddy she can go with. I know I hated it when I was young and had to go to a 2 week long camp.
Mom is here -- reading all these great posts! You guys are awesome! Carly doesn't necessarily stick to me like "butter on toast", but we have a 10 y/o daughter who DOES -- I've come to call her my little "growth" (truth be told, I love it!) Carly loves me, of course, but she IS more of a "Daddy's Girl". I was out of town on business yesterday when Jerry picked Carly up from volleyball and she was crying. By the time I got home, he had started the F-Chat thread and we had all kinds of suggestions. I love how you guys help each other out. I'm happy (and pround) to say that Carly insisted on attending the final day of volleyball camp today and she came out of the school beaming from ear to ear when Jerry picked her up this time. She apparently made a few good saves and really went after the ball, prompting a compliment from the coach. She wants to try out for the team so we plan to buy her a ball, net, etc. this weekend and helping her practice. She brought home info on another volleyball camp that starts the end of July. Assuming she still likes it by then, we plan on letting her go. Carly is good at so many important things like academics, violin, technology (I go to her when I have computer problems or trouble with the DVD player!), and, like Jerry said, is so caring and empathetic to others. She has the biggest heart of anyone I've ever known! It is heartbreaking when she gets down on herself. I coached "Girls on the Run" this Spring and both of our daughters were involved. We ran our 5K on 5/19, and Carly did great -- however, she said she didn't enjoy it! When I suggested maybe track or cross-country and she said she wasn't interested. I think Jerry is right that she mostly wants to do a sport because she wants to "fit in" somewhere with her peers (junior high is such a hard time!). Like a lot of 12 y/o's, she is trying to find her "identity" and she sees that many of the popular kids at school are involved in sports. Hopefully, the volleyball thing will be a positive experience in the end, whether she ends up pursuing it further or not. If not, thank you so much, all of you, for your great ideas and advice.
I've always sucked at volleyball except for serving. My natural skills include softball pitching/throwing over hand & batting, football, gymnastics parallel bars but not balance beam, tennis power shots, etc. All she needs to do is find her rhythm. My dad alway threw ball w/ me in the street. Even I now have a good arm & can keep up w/ the guys.
Lloyd and I were thinking along the same lines.....I say sailboat racing! Sunfish are plentiful and cheap and about that same age I was gifted one...... Captain of the ship! lots of good exercise, sun and fun..... And the social scene would be an added benefit.....you meet the nicest folks at the Club. Good luck!
my daughter was also "athletically challenged".....I found that she picked up on snowboarding very quickly. You see all kinds of body types skiing and snowboarding. Of course it requires some strenght, but my daughter was very clumsy, not good at soccer, and ins't strong........she'd done very well in snowboarding...........it's MUCH easier than it looks.
Good to hear the positive change on volleyball, my lil' image has played that for years and it DOES take some time to get the hand/eye thing down and even then I've seen many a net serve by girls that can hammer it to the back line! Hang in there!
Sup mom I specifically quoted this part for emphasis on technology. If anything -- everyone knows computers are the future. Make sure you get Carly the latest computer gear you can get her and let her explore computers on her own. I'm not saying let her visit porn sites, you should block that stuff on your router (I can teach you how), but the internet is FULL of ways to keep the devil out of an idle mind. If Carly is someone who can grasp new concepts quickly -- computers are perfect for her. Let her flex her skills, figuring things out (at least for me and my brother) are ego trips. It's nice to get things working where others have failed.
