Hey everyone, Took two tries, but my '76 passed emissions in Nevada. Not very hard out here, but it is amazing how small adjustments make such a big difference. This is with both air pumps in operation and stock jetting (I am changing the jetting back as I write this).

    Idle test @ 1000rpm: 89 ppm hydrocarbons .89 CO%
    2500 test: 198 ppm hydrocarbons .34 CO%

Hard to believe with all the nuclear waste in Nevada that they have emissions testing.

    Congrats !!
I dread mine coming up in a couple of months. Not because I fear it not passing but because those guys haven't a clue what they're doing with Ferraris. 2 years ago I went and asked them if they knew how to do Ferraris, they guy tells me "oh ya, we do them all the time", they were looking up front for the engine, couldn't find the cat, etc etc, (I told them, if they break it, they bought it)
I was a nervous wreck by the time I left. (at least they had an old guy do the roller test, no grinding gears at least).

Are the carb ones harder to smog then the injected ones ?

I'm just glad there aren't that many cars out there to get tested. In MA at least, the computer makes sure your car is not only below the threshold, but also close to the average for that make and year, to ensure no funny business is going on. But since they don't have enough data on these cars to have a reliable average, it doesn't notice if, say, the probe 'accidentally' falls out of the tailpipe during the test.

Well, the emissions plate on the car states that at idle and high idle, the car should not be putting out more than 300 hydrocarbons and not more than 1.5 CO%. So even if they didd have the required data, I think we would be okay. Thank God I didn't have to do this in Colorado. I hear they are the toughest.

And yes, the early carb cars have to be in a good state of tune to pass emissions. They are generally much harder because the jetting must be stock jetting and all must be dead-on.

Actually, you'd be just fine in MA anyway, since '83 and older are exempt. But for my '85, I've got to do better than 200 on the hydrocarbons which is a bit iffy for my car.

I hear QVs don't put out half that many hydrocarbons. There is a local fellow who just got a Euro QV and he failed emissions the first time. I wish I knew how to help him, but I am dumb when it comes to tuning injected cars. I was told to change the oil, plugs, and make sure the timing is set dead-on and any US car would pass easy. Makes one very nervous going in anyway though!

Injected 400i's & 412's are famous for not being able to pass emissions. The factory CO settings are between 1 and 2% which will fail you in almost every state.
Simple fix; out in the parking lot you lean the snot out of it. Get tested. Pass. Re-adjust and drive away.

In Nevada, it is not legal to make any adjustments on the car at the test facility. I almost got my hand bit when I touched my carbs there lol

Also, make sure you have a fresh tank of gas. Once did the test with an old tankful and hit the HC on the max allowed. Next time I filled the tank before the test and passed with flying colors.
