please tell me if my expectations are unrealistic. i don't mind paying for the additional maintenance but i don't want a car so tempermental that i can't rely on it for an occasional 1000 mi road trip.

the 996 is relativily bomb proof...the 355 is not, there is no compairson!!!!!but i dont see why i properly maintained 355 can be taken an occasional 100 mile trip...but the car and drive it and enjoy it...you only live once!!!!!!!

i've owned two 996s (C2 Cab and TT) and one 355 ('99 Spider).

on a service-dollars per mile basis, the 996TT was the most expensive, the 355 next, and the C2 Cab at the bottom. and the two 996s were in warranty while the 355 was not.

the major service is what'll whack you good - i did not do one on my 355.

but i wouldn't worry about general reliability if you take care of it.

    doody.

I have logged 31 track days (3.5 sets of tires, 7 sets of brake pads, 1 set of rotors) on my F355 and driven over 20K miles in the first 2.5 years of ownership and ate a major service this winter. Last fall I did an over 1000 mile vacation in the F355.

Except for the times the battery ran down while it sat forgotten in the garage, it has never missed a beat.

I find, overall, that the weeks I use the car as a daily driver, the car is even less tempremental than when it sits weeks hidden in the garage. It is a modern car and can be both thrashed and used constantly--in fact--I think the car like being used much better than being neglected.

A couple of weeks ago somebody took a 95 F355 in with 102,000 miles on the clock from a gentleman of 82 who was no longer allowed to drive due to vision problems. Buy it, drive it, maintain it.

Man, he must have been 'da pimp over at the nursing home :). JK, I just hope I'm still able to get around at 82 (heck, I'm hoping I *live* to 82!).

If you drive the car often, it will be more reliable than if it's used sporadically. Maintenance is very important as is the mechanic who performs the work.

Mitch had it right: Drive it, maintain it, love it
