[lee] - yeah, just pull the lip and it pops right up no problemo. [bobafett] - my car snapped actual wires inside the cabling on the actuators - twice. one time the actuator got replaced wholesale. another time the mechanic was able to connect the broken wire back and tape it back up. doody.
Doody: Twice? Damn! Mine, when I first discovered it (and when I had forgotten about it too) seemed to be holding in place due to how tight the cable was pulled... of course I unspun in order to avoid any complications, but I'm surprised. My guess is for the first five years of its life, mine were spun up... --Dan
I ve had thee problem over the weekend. suspension warning coming on... checked and passager side actuator was twisted. untangled the cable and immediately light was off. keeps on coming. funnily enough the part on driver side is different, looks llike upgraded. does not twist. car is 98 550. i do not have the part number but it has same white markings as per the pic. posted in thread. the other one (driver side - not twisting) does not have markings.
Thibaut: can you explain further? What do you mean looks different, and which white markings in which picture? Your suspension light is most likely directly related to the actuators, as you discovered. If I were you, undo both sides (even if not twisted - doesn't hurt to undo / recheck), and then put them back on. Orient them so that you'll know if it has rotated... --Dan
well boba let me try to be more specific. the one on the passager side is red with text written in white on it. just the same as the pic posted in the thread. The other one looks different : the color is still red but not as shiny and there are no white text / markings. plus the wire seems to be different: the passager side has plastic wrapping whereas the other has something that looks like fabric type wrapping. plus the wire seem shorter. my guess is that the driver side may have upgraded at some point ? i need to take the care to the dealer in the next two weeks for a redkey issue and i will get them to fix the actuator on the passager side. sorry i should have takeen a picture. wont be able to do it for a while since i will be travelling in the next few days. does it help ?
in the pic posted by doody at the beginging of the thread you see white text on the red actuator. well that what is missing to the seemingly updated part i have on the driver side will disscuss the matter with verdi. i am sure we will get to the bottom on this issue
thibault - the actuators themselves haven't been changed. i imagine the part may have changed over the years that ferrari used it in a wide variety of cars (cf. redhead's post), but it's always been the same part #. you probably just have a different "batch" of actuator on each side, one of which doesn't have the text on it. what's changed is the "stuff" that the actuator connects into. fwiw, doody.
On my 2000, 550 w/11k, no spinning issues noted. Had the dealer run a service record .... no mention of any fixes or the part # 173900 fix.
Search under "355 actuators" as they are very similar; and there are threads with photos that are more recent. On the 355 there is no problem with them "spinning" just the plastic gear on top of the shock breaking. Hill Engineering now makes a machined steel replacement for that. Strange you would turn up a thread from over 3 years ago....shopping for something newer? Or just bored at work?
