Who wants a new 288 GTO?

    I think the 288GTO is gorgeous!!!!It would be awesome if they 'reissued' it!! The well defined curves and lines the 288GTO has would be very nice to see again.... the enzo is the only current "great" looking Ferrari IMO :)

    i agree w/you except for the Enzo thing. asset value aside, i'll pass on that one. has some "design challenges."

    I dont mean to threadjack but Im curious as to the ages of those that feel the 288GTO is better looking than any modern Ferrari ( or car period).

    I wonder if its because we are old and nostalgic or really because it IS better looking. Im wondering if a lot of 20somethings agree with this.

    I am 38 and think the 288GTO is the best looking sports car of all time.

    i'm 37 and give the 288 GTO the total thumbs up for sports car design. it's not the best as none of them are, but it is among the best in the world ever built and designed. period.

    the Enzo does not at all capture the hard-on quality of design that the 288 has. the Enzo has good and bad angles, and is overall "strange." the GTO just walks right in the door and takes over. is delicious and sexual.

    Pininfarina described the new Enzo as a sculpted shape that can be interpreted in different ways. Yeah ... I think the 288gto can only be interpreted as beautiful. My opinion is that Ferrari has gone off track a little with trying to emulate their road cars with race cars. Maybe it is time to get back to building truly beautiful road cars like the 288. While some of the new cars are nice, as years pass I think some may be viewed as awkward.

    --seems like a very tentative statement from them, lacking in confidence. the Enzo as well looks like it was designed by seven or eleven different people each fighting for attention.

    but not so with the GTO. even if just as many people designed it, it doesn't show. the GTO's pure aesthetic balance of form unifies the tension and movement between the curves and shapes from every single angle possibly viewed; it is "one."

    I have yet to encounter anyone young or old who dislikes a 288gto. Watch this video and ask yourself if it could be remade to a 2008+ model.

    Thanks for the compliments of the Photochop pic!

    Some of you maybe noticed that alot of Enzo parts were used in photoshopping the pic, rear valance, side skirts, front lip, mirrors, wheels... It's basicly the only angular enough modern ferrari to lend it lines to 288, rest of them are too round.

    I'll see if I can finish that pic some night (right now quite the hackjob), so opinnions/wishes how the car should look are welcome.

    pic looks good :)

    the wheels look great on it - but then i was never a fan of the original ones
    really liking what youve done with the rear valance/bumper.
    very nice move with the side vents too

    dislikes
    undecided about the mirrors, i can see why you added them but the originals were great too and paid homage to the ferrari sports racers of 60's an 70's
    the lip spoiler - id personally either just deepen the original design or make any lip very subtle
    the strip indicators on front and rear.

    id also like to see it with the door a pillars in body colour - just for comparison.

    The 288 was an impressive machine for its day. But I've never been all that big a fan of turbos.

    What would be awsome would be for Ferrari to buck the trend towards bigger, fatter cars with monster horsepower, and take a page from Colin Chapman's handbook to make a small, lightweight sportscar for the real world.

    Not a two ton technology topped toy that could travel at half the speed of light -- if the cops didn't arrest you before you got out of first.

    But a lightweight, normal breathing car that corners like there's no such thing as inertia, does zero to 45 in a blink, and can stop on a dime and give you nine cents change. Something to make driving an experience, without having to have access to a Space Shuttle runway or the Bonneville Salt Flats to let it stretch its legs.

    Maybe something like an Exige with a 246 Dino mill? Or, for that matter, something like the 246GT Dino. ;)

    Just a thought.

    My version certainly doesn't (in my head, at least). The design just has a sensuous, lithe, muscularity not present in the overly-designed wind-tunnel products of today. The horrid inflamed nostrils on the back deck of the 430 are a prime example - the whole design may work wonders, but the boy-racer-anime cues just spoil any beauty from the original 360, which was kinda pushing it as it was.

    Like DGS (and I suspect, others), I've never been a fan of the turbos, even on the 288. That aspect was one of the few I didn't like about the original.

    in my "updaated gto dream" i envisage a lightweight small (ish) capacity V12 :D

    One thing that would look really tuff is deep offset rear wheels like the original, but with a more modern center section. In my mind I picture LED's like the Audi R8 has in place of the four square headlights. I think the 288gto is the perfect size for a sportscar and at 2600 lbs., quite light compared to most of today's cars.
