On Saturday 30 June the life of an American hero will be celebrated at the USAFA. There are rumors of a special fly-by. It might be a unique chance to witness a bit of history and say thank you.

Cirque de Soleil Corteo is showing: http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/CirqueDuSoleil/en/showstickets/corteo/intro/intro.htm

There's also an car show event at Craig Hospital:

CRAIG HOSPITAL’S 15TH ANNUAL MOTORSPORTS DAY

This year the 15th annual Motorsports Day will be Wednesday, July 11th, 2007 from 8am to 1pm in the parking lots adjacent to Craig Hospital at the corner of South Clarkson and Girard streets. The address is 3425 South Clarkson Street in Englewood. There will be close to 200 antique, classic and hot rod cars on display. Admission is free. They would love to have as many Ferraris shown as possible.

The purpose of the event is to provide current and former Craig patients with an opportunity to view world class automobiles and vehicles modified for drivers with disabilities.

Craig patients have all experienced a catastrophic injury to their spinal cord and/or brain which limits their ability to participate in many actives we take for granted.

The event will run from 8am to 1pm. Many owners and their cars are here well before 5am in hopes of getting a shady spot. Shade is limited and usually filled by 6 – 6:15am every year.

Go to the Broadmoor. Eat in the Garden Room.

Take the tram to the top of Pike's Peak. It snowed on the 4th of July on top. No problem, just take a light jacket.

Garden of the Gods. Take the free walking tour. Every hour on the hour during the day.

Take a tour of the Air force Academy.

Drive the Rampart Range Road to Deckers. Take 24 west to Woodland Park. Go north to Deckers on the South Platte. Some of the best trout fishing on the eastern slope. Will be crowded on weekends.

Drink lots of water. No caffeine. No Alcohol. Eat normally.

    Enjoy.

Drive up Mt Evans west of Denver. It is the highest paved road in the world. There is usually a lot of wildlife up there as well. There is a car show in Buena Vista 7/7. A great ride from the front range.

...or go all the way to Hartsel for the best view in the state (Wilkerson Pass) and one of the most spectacular valleys on Earth (South Park).

Have to go farther to the Arkansas valley to get the really good views. Wilkerson is pretty ho hum. You gotta get out farther, Doug.

I've been literally everywhere in this state (to all 64 counties and each county seat, among many other places) and have found no view view like Wilkerson. The vast expanse of South Park coupled with the Collegiate Range and Spinney Mountain Reservoir off in the distance - in my view there is nothing on this Earth like Wilkerson. My girlfriend is coming to visit for just one week and I'm taking her to all my favorite places - Aspen, Ouray, Lookout Mountain for its Denver views, Mt. Evans - and Wilkerson. I recommend all out-of-state visitors see it.

Regarding the Arkansas valley - perhaps you are referring to the scenic overlook just past Trout Creek Pass when you're southbound on 285 just before entering Johnson Village? The mountains are too close and the brush is too thick for a really spectacular view.

For comparion, here is a shot of Wilkerson (and Spinney Mountain Reservoir) and here is a shot of the Collegiate Peaks from the previously-described overlook near Johnson Village on 285.

printedgear...It was good talking to you this morning on the phone. I browsed the local club's upcomming events for you and it looks like there is the annual Mystery Rally. Maybe try and contact Jim Walters, he is the club pres.
Also, you are more than welcome to stop by FoD and compare the Wynn's place to our humble dealership :)

All the mountains are too far from Wilkerson. As it is it takes a really clear day to even see the collegiates from there. Mt Princeton is about 10 miles as the crow flies from my window. It's still too far. But this is a matter of taste and I will argue no further.

I understand your point, however what I like best about Wilkerson is the vast expanse - I feel like seeing all that set out in front of you is as close as Colorado comes to having that 'ocean feeling' - like you're so small and it's so big. It really gives you a sense of perspective, in my view.

Maybe, then, you're right - as a scenic point it's not the greatest - but to me the feeling it gives you is unparallelled.

    Agree to disagree I suppose!

There's a small car show in Green Mtn. Falls, just west of the Springs tomorrow, mostly muscle and street rods, prolly zero f-cars, but it's something to do.

If you really want to do something car related in the Springs, I need a TH400 pulled out of my 67 Pontiac, and assorted services done on my 914...just let me know! ;)
