Hola everybody, i'm thinking to buy an '87 208 gts turbo. I'v seen the car and it's perfect, like just came from the factory. The car is 97000 km(about 60000miles) and all services done in oficial Ferrari garage.

the cuestion is: what are the normal problems of these cars?? I mean things that goin to break or I will have to change in the next km if i buy it.

I really love that car. It sounds like devil is in the engine... hahaha.

Hasta la vista!!! and thanks in advance.

A 208 GTS turbo is just like a 308 GTS only it has a 2 litre V8 with turbos to make it produce about the same bhp as a 308. This was done for tax reasons in the italian market.

Turbo's are the weak part in the system. If the car's exhaust blows alot of blue smoke, it's a sign that the turbo's oil seals have failed and that is very expensive to fix.

With any high-performance turbocharged car, you should let the engine cool down for a few minutes before shutting the motor off after you have finished driving.

Great buy! Don't listen to people in this forum about turbo ferrari's that don't have personal experience about them! The -87 car that you talking about has 254hp/33,5 kgm is also have an intercooler. The car is based on a 328. Very great engine sounds like a jet fighter. The power kick is very nice from the turbo and you don't need to rev. it so hard, like a 328. The turbo is not a problem! Is water cooled and very cheap to rebuild around 500 euro.

Attaching some pictures of my GTB turbo.

    Have a nice Ferrari!

    Claes,

Can you describe the difference in how the 308 feels and your car? (if you've driven a 308)

They are terrific cars. We have one ex Vaccarella that was a gift to him from Enzo. My son drove it twice in the Historic Targa Florio. No problems at all. Parts are no problem and turbo rebuild isn't any big deal.

The 208 (ours is a 88) is much more modern than a 308 (Mine was an 80) Feels faster and more refined.

I agree with csmn the turbo is most probably the cheapest bit to repair .I don't know what turbo it is but if the bearing has a watercooled housing then shut down is not an issue. The clutch could be more of an issue as you slip the clutch to build boost for a quick get away.

If I remember right there were two different turbos used on the 208 (in 328 body) and the later one is the one to go for. Here's a GTB that was at the 60th anniversary in Maranello. Note where the Pininfarina badge ended up.
