5 years ago this Boxer would have never made the chat board unless it was to high priced or to low but I am glad to see that at least some of you are talking about it. I am the owner of this black beauty but tired of looking at it in my theater of my house and its been hard not touching the car. I can see that EFI would make a better performing car and can see of a couple turbos on it. Believe me when I said it has been hard not touching it. I have a 208 GTB Turbo which had single turbo and CIS system. I put twin turbos, EFI and distribuless ignition on and cranking out about 350hp. I bought my wife an old 308 GT4 to drive but decided to rebuild the engine and you know what happens after that. It ended up with a blower and EFI, after having her hold and type in the laptop when I was tuning the car she decided she would never get back in it. I put the ring and pinion gear out of the 208 in it, its much lower and now the car would make a good 1/4 car. So you can see what kind of guy I am and the extent of my passion for speed. I have on order a superformance GT40 Mk 1. This is car I can do what ever I want to without loosing value or I can take it to the track and race it and if it gets tore up then I can get parts for it. With the boxer that is not possible! I can't drive it to dinner without worrying about it and I can see that a lot of mods would make it a better performing car but really afraid to do anything to and as its becoming a museum piece. I have always loved the boxer, the first one I seen up close was in the mid 80's at an Italian car show in Dallas, the guy was a great person to talk to, he had a bunch of pizza pallors in Fort Smith, AR. This car had twin turbos on it from Norwood. I will say that when it took of I got the same feeling I use to get when working on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. It gives you goose bumps. I later heard he hit a deer on the way home and it was close to $70k to repair the car. This has stuck in my mind when I drive this unmolested original boxer. The paint is original and in my opinion I would only repair the key scratch in the back. Yes, the dash needs repair and your correct its not a weekend job. I also have a 79 carbed 400a which we drive everywhere and love the car. I think a 5 speed would make this car a real hoot to drive. I can't understand the value of these cars, its crazy as this is one of the best V12s Ferrari has ever made for reliability. But back to the subject, I replace the dash leather with black leather noggahide (spelling?), it stretches easily and also UV rays will not make it shrink, this took me several days and most things in that car are easy to get to. I have not done the boxer and it might need the windshield removed to do it and I would want to go back with leather. Just my thoughts. Ok enough, if you want to see pictures of my cars email me, I will send them to you. Oh I have a 1980 LP 400s Countach with EFI and also as a spare motor one of the 3 twin turbo Lamborghini 400 motors that Bob Wallace made. :) [email protected] ps grammar and spelling not my bag

    Hey Jack,

I started to email you a link after all the discussion here, but like many things, my intentions were good but... and you know what they say about good intentions. I'm VERY glad you made it this way; thanks to Newman for extending the invitation.

As evidenced by your ebay description and your response here today, you're a "tell it like it is" guy; refreshing to say the least. Sounds like you also have a defective need-for-speed gene, which means you fit in perfectly here!

I've a black boxer as well, with original paint and the usual dimples and marks but I love it just the same. I've got other cars that I mod a bit, but you're right, with a Boxer it's hard to go 'part way' on the mods. (Check the thread on "Boxer Restoration" by Markpeboxer, our resident president of Over-Indulgence and you'll see what I mean!http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=137758)

Anyway, welcome here. We hope your Boxer finds a great home and hope you consider this one as well.

    Welcome as well, Jack!
I enjoyed your honest appraisal of your car in the e-bay ad. And true, almost all these cars need a little help in one way or another, but most love em none the less.
Sorry the other thread regarding your car got drudged down into the ‘I want my $200 spark plug wires’ mud.
Good luck on the sale of your car.

Me, myself and I. Sometimes I feel like I need 2 more of me with all I do. :) I have a mustang rear wheel dyno, its only good for 350hp but great for tuning up to a point. Full throttle high RPM gets a little exciting so I have someone type for me when I am on the fly and then come back and look at the maps on the computer. I have only used electromotive but there is a lot of new stuff out there that I would like to try. I would love to have a motec but they are out of this world in price and now that electromotive has a good enough wiring harness I think they compete pretty well. Here are a couple pics I have on this computer, one is my Countach motor which I did in 92-93, the other is of my R5 Group B car that can run 20+ psi boost, the other is of my 308GT4 stop light sleeper. I have a short video of the 308 eating the tires before hooking up, the blower sounds sooo good. The area where the boxer, Countach, and R5 are is the theater in my house, the garages are out back of it. I am a real gear head. Did I mention heated and AC with epoxy floors. :)

I am trying to find pictures of the 208 motor before I took it out, I am boring the motor to 2.8 and raising the compression to 8.5-1. Here is a picture of the 400 with after-market wheels, they are not BBS but sure make a difference with the handling of the car and I think it looks better. The car is for sale $21k drive home to anywhere, the ac compressor has a leak, its been changed to R134 but I don't have time to change compress to rotory and think its priced right for a great driver. Car has some rust bubbles around the rear window, its not perfect but runs perfect. Next time you buy a honda remember the sound from a V12 and you'll get sick.

I agree, I have never seen a Countach that shade before, stunning, and an excellent picture too. The theater area of your house? Not sure I understand it, looks like there is seating in the middle, id this a living area in your house also?

I had the Countach painted, its black cherry pearl. The original paint was red with white pin striping, it was hideous.

The 308 GT4 was a project of mixed stuff in my garage. I am going to change the induction system and use a Mercedes blower with electric clutch, the intercooler on the MB is a far better design than I made. The compressor will be able to disengage when not under load, this will make a far smother engine at idle. The intercooler that is under the blower is from a ford lightning and is not my best work by far but still functions even though it looks like crap.

The theater in the house is 44 wide by 66 long. The seating area is 2.5 feet below the car level. From the floor to the ceiling in the seating area is 26 feet which is painted black and has stars hanging down at different levels, which glow at when the lights are turned off. I am a kid at heart even though I have an old body.

If you look at the background of the picture of the Countach you will see a flag on top of the theater, its on the back of the house which is an octagon shape with the middle open to the sky. Sort of like a doughnut.

One more thing, I do imaging on stone with a laser cnc machine. here is a picture I put on 32X52 inch piece of black granite. It was taken of me in the Pocono's on the in field in 93 or 94. I am going to put this on the wall behind the Countach in the theater.

Jack, great buy on the boxer, looking at your car it would seem that both of ours were federalised at the same place. As you have noticed on your 400 the metric wheels and tires are reall sub par. The biggest single improvement you can make to a boxer is modern rubber, the ride, grip and feel move to another dimension. After 13 years with trx's I switched and felt that the prior period had been with half the car I now have.

Your efi conversions look very interesting, apparently a boxer puts out over 400bhp with one, let us know if you move in that direction, it is something I have thought of quite a bit, but untill someone like you who knows what they are doing does it, and sorts it,the conversion will seem too pricey.

Ferrari had two falws in the BBI, the tires and the FI, both are fixable these days and would make the boxer the car it was meant to be, certainly close to a 288gto in performance. How the market would view a efi conversion remains to be seen, but since an 275 with carb upgrades doesent suffer maybe the time is right.

Your R5 looksawsome, one of my favorites ever. If I remember corectly though the stock performance by todays standards was ok, but apparently they can be wound up to 350bhp, it this true.

Your superformance GT40 idea for track work seems spot on. A boxer does not a great track car make and the bits can get expensive. Thinking of going that way myself now that porche has not chosen to supply most 08 gt3 orders. Do you know of any superformance cars with roll cages and fuel cells, had a look at the rcr gt40, great for the track but far from original.

Anyway enough rambling, welcome to the boxer community. Lets us know how it all goes.

Thank you for your comments and you know your stuff, I like dealing with someone who has the same perspective as me. I am a true die hard gear head, I love the cars for what they are not for what they make some people. Fitting in has always been a weakness of mine.

I havent seen an SPF GT40 upclose. But if the fit and finish is anything like the MKIII, I can certainly vouch for the quality. I just got mine about a month ago and the attention to detail is really impressive.

Beautiful car! I got a ride in one of these which was souped up to 600 hp and the ride was truly frightening. I was clinging on for dear life and screaming like a little school girl (on the inside) while we sped along the freeways and on-ramps in Orange County, CA. The whole time, I was thinking that if we crashed, definitely cancel Christmas!

    that is funny jessie!!!

i have driven the spf mk II and will agree w/ jessie...it is a very, very serious car. the car is effectively a street legal race car and is authentic to a very high degree of detail.

i have been talking to olitoff racing on these cars for two years now and dennis has instructed me to hold out till this year as the development process has been long and arduous...but the car is "there" now!

i have wanted a wyer racing replica mkI ...i may pull the trigger this fall if i don't go the kirkham cobra route.

net, net...i support your decision to go the spf gt-40 route. what a machine!!!!!!!!!

You know, Pete, I almost bought one from the Superformance dealer in Orange County thinking that it would be a fun, cool car to have. The fit and finish rivals any modern production car standards. I got a ride from one of the customers and he scared the crap out of me even though he was in complete control the whole time. My big problem was that I just had a hard time with the whole replica stigma and not to mention the possible difficulties of insuring and registering it. It also was a bit impractical for me to spend about $47k to $50k on a car with no roof. I don't like being in the sun necessesarily so I thought that if the weather wasn't perfect, then when would I drive it? I'm sure they are a blast to drive and maybe one day I may get one. But the Boxer is the ultimate for now despite the fact that the "replica" will absolutely smoke it!
