I am having a garage sale in a couple of weeks ( On a Saturday or Sunday )and need some tips. In genaral, a 'like new' item that costs $100, should I have a problem getting $40 for it? Melodie and I are arguing about:

    1) I want to have the sale from 11AM to 4PM. She says we have to start early.

    2) I want to get optimum dollars for my items. Melodie says 'Get rid of the stuff at any price'!

    3) I want to spend $100 on a bold, framed ad three days before the sale (In our local paper). Is this a bad idea?

In going from a 4800 SF house full of stuff to a 1500 SF townhouse, we have a LOT of stuff, more than I thought! Are most garage sale go'ers going to beat the hell out of me over prices? What tips can you throw out?

BTW, downsizing stinks! I do not miss the attention that the big house needs, as the small TH is a piece of cake to keep clean! Getting the house ready to rent is REALLY a PITA!

If you wanna milk your stuff for everything it's worth, you won't sell a single item. People go to garage sales for BARGAINS, not to pay almost full price for some used item.

Also, most of the hard core purchasers will arrive BEFORE noon, so opening at 11AM is a really bad idea.

You need to be ready to sell things cheap or you won't sell anything at all. Most people will pay a fair price, but you can't ask for too much or you'll scare everyone off.

+1. You have to open early, and expect early birds if you advertise in the paper. We advertised in our local paper for a 9am start and people were there before 8am. We found it was worth puting the ad in the paper, alot of people use that as a road map for garage sales.

    Listen to Melodie.

Open early 8:00 AM is best.

Sell cheap, be prepared to get offers of 10 cents on the original dollar, if you're lucky.

Don't bother trying to sell clothes, give 'em to goodwill. you'll get more from the tax deduction than you ever would have at the sale.

Bargain, a little. But in the end, don't pass up a sale at any number that remotely resembles what you're asking. After all, the objects are:

    1. Get rid if stuff.
    2. Get rid of more stuff.
    3. Get rid of all the stuff.
    4. Maybe put a few bucks in your pocket.

And remember, Goodwill will probably come and pick up anything that doesn't sell.

You are probably right, I just do not want to wake up that early, but I guess I'll have to! What do you think about advertising it as a 'Make us an offer' sale and do not put price tags on anything. I think that would give me a better chance to 'read' the buyer and get dialog going.

Optimum dollars and garage don't belong in the same sentence.

    1) Try to sell it on ebay

    2) Give it away

    3) Throw it away

It seems like you have a lot work ahead that day just to set up.

I would suggest an ad if you have nice items that are worth a few twenties, it might bring more people and more offers.

Also if you're going through the trouble of having a sale you might as well get as many people there ASAP and get it over with ASAP.

I haven't had a garage sale and for the amount of stuff you're getting rid of it may be an all day-er

Put an ad on craigslist....that is if your neighbors have computers....

Put arrow signs all around the neighborhood

    start early

your goal is an empty garage!

    Takes too much time.

Put a tag on there, make it reasonable, negotiate price for 10 seconds, then cave.

I have been there, done this. Trust me, start low, go lower.

    OH OH OH!!!

I can see it now. FREE SUPER GLUE WITH EVERY PURCHASE. In fact, maybe if you coat some of the objects with crazy glue, even if they don't want to buy the item they'll be stuck with it.

I think that's a great idea myself because if I saw that I would show up for sure, but some people don't like to make offers, so in reality it might not work so well. They would feel cheap for asking such a low price. If you put a low price on it, they don't feel so cheap, they're paying what you asked. Hopefully that makes sense.

That's it then, no prices. Will probably list a couple of prices, like on the solid walnut armorie and the Cal King walnut bed with back shelf I built a few years ago, $200 each get raise some eyebrows.

Haha. What pissed me off was that I could not find these chairs any place but at one small (house design) shop and could not find any paperwork in their dumpster the following Sunday when they were closed. All I know is they were imported fom the Philippines and probably paid $40 each from some small manufacturer that paid slave wages!

What ever time you do plan to open, expect to have people there an hour earlier. Usually those who come the earliest are 'dealers' looking for antiquities or furniture, who re-sell them to antique shops, or they have their own stores.

Expect everyone to bargain on all your prices. What ever your thinking of selling put 20% or 30% on top of it to give leniency to the bargainers.

This is all a factor on your area of location and the goods you have for sale.

    This might help:

    Here's an idea:

Do you have anything interesting and small enough to ship?

Hold a few items of value/ interest for sale here. Post a picture and start the bidding for an item in say 1 hours time after you originally post the item. Or just leave a few items up until the garage sale begins.
