i recently began reading up on the history of the Mille Miglia and these pictures greatly bring to life what that event may have looked like back so many decades ago. the cars of the era are absolutely stunning works of art.

and to see the actual place where the tragic accident occurred is very special. thank you for presenting these images.

Awesome machinery! I own a V-12 Ferrari but you're only a man once you own one of these.... I just can't believe how beautiful they are - both the #0684 and the 300S.

You'll find the accident details more or less accurately described in diverse period publications, the cause/s for it however remain still uncertain and subject of unendind debates within connoisseurs.

During a visit around Modena in September 1991, I visited the shop of Fiorenzo FANTUZZI, the son of the great master carrozziere Medardo FANTUZZI. There were many cars from the Albert OBRIST collection. Among them was 315s #0684 during restoration. Unfortunatelly, some months later, Carrozzeria FANTUZZI closed the doors...

The car is a 1947 Rovelli/FIAT balilla based car, with a Testadoro (Testadoro refers to a special cross-flow cylinder head made by Casa 'dell Auto for the Fiat 1100 balilla motor) with coachwork by Castagna. The car originally had a removable hardtop. I belive the original motor is gone too, and the car currently has a later Fiat 1100/103 series motor, circa 1953...

Why Rovelli? One of the two ower of Casa dell'Auto was Roselli? It is an error or Rovelli is another person? Thanks.

The 315S s/n 0684 competed in the inaugural races at Bridgehampton, NY in September of 1957. The car was owned by Gene Greenspun, and finished 11th in the feature race.

The 315S 0684 is the most important and beautiful Ferrari of all times IMO.
Not too many photos if it around, so if you have some ´recent´photos from the last years, would love to see them!
Ferrari 315S and 335S are the pinnacle from Ferrari´s golden era!

I haven´t seen any photo of 0656 ever. Is there any of it? Still in Perfetti´s hands?

    Best,

A few pics of 0656 here - from accident at Bridgehampton in 1957, to TR-style body in 1958-59, at the Monterey historics in 1984, and then back to 315 S body by Fantuzzi in 1985.

I believe that the photo taken at Fantuzzi's in Modena was taken in 1987, not 1985.

There are some great detail pictures of 0656 in the Cavalleria series of books No. 7 Ferrari 315 S, text by Antoine Prunet, pictures by Pietro Carrieri. Some of these pictures of 0656 are also in Ferrari The Red Dream which is on the front cover. Text in this one by Doug Nye. The 4 cam engines on these cars must be among the most beautiful ever made.
