Years ago there was a post describing this proceedure. I cannot find it anymore. Can someone please re-post a detailed description on how to do this? Mine needs it.

I created my own procedure based on compilations of various posts here and in the old f-chat. I'm a rank amateur though. Perhaps others can find the faults in my write-up :). As far as my car goes I believe my shift alignment is sound.

I don't remember it being that complicated. I am glad I asked.

My mechanic up in Huntsville has done that to my car several times over the last 14 years... they do occasionally work loose and/or get out of alignment.

It's pretty easy and self-explanitory. You need someone sitting in the car to change gears while you are under the car watching the forks and setting the linkage "just right". It takes a little practice because when you torque down the linkage, it moves out of alignment. So the trick is to put it out of alignment the other way so that when you torque it down, it torques into alignment. Takes a few tries, but not hard. Hard to explain, but pretty easy to see when it's open in front of you.

You have to remove the tranny pan and obviously it's ten times easier with the car on a lift. Might as well do the shifter shaft seals while you're in there.

Nice write up. After you do it once that way and understand how the pieces work together, you will be able to adjust the linkage without removing the pan simply by hearing the gears as they are selected and visualizing what's going on inside the trans. As stated in the write up, it will take several attempts at tightening the adjuster locking nuts to get it just right.

If the car was left in 1st gear and the shifter removed would you still have the same problem?
    thanks
