Hey everyone, Thought I would chime in regarding how my '76 handled this ludicrous heat compared to my '86 911. I do have upgraded cooling fans on the 308 which blow all kinds of air.

The 911 heats up and the temp just won't go down when it is over 110. It gets *really* hot. The 308 gets to the halfway mark while driving on the freeway and sits right about there or a littel below if I am moving steadily. If I stop or am in traffic for a bit, it creeps past the midway point and almost to the 230 line. That is in traffic, in 113 degree ludicrous heat with the a/c on (not working well in this heat I might add). The oil temp does not go much past the halfway point during all of this.

Anyone have this kind of heat who can chime-in on what their temps are? I think I am going to garage this thing until late August. Too hot!

Almost the exact same deal 300 miles south of you here in Yuma...it's ok as long as you are moving, but in traffic, fuggetaboutit! Have my fans wired to a switch to run them as I see fit but it still isn't enough, even with the air off. Short of some serious re-engineering, there doesn't seem to be much else to do but park it until the sun goes down. (Or until October!)

I just upgraded my cooling fans to two 12inch hayden fans I also installed a switch so I could turn the fans on when I want. This weekend I am planning on taking a trip to Flagstaff to see how it handles a drive in the heat there and back. Hopefully it will do fine. So far in the last few days it has stayed pretty cool about the half way point on the gauge all the time. Of course it has only been a couple days since installing the fans and switch. My car is a european car so my gauge is in C not F. The half way point is 90degrees. So far it has not passed that point since the fan installation.

I was at the track on Weds...drove all the way for an hour and was below half way. Honked on the car hard for a full session 25 minutes...high revs and strong driving and the temp was just past half way..210 -230mark. The tem outside was 85, but on the track im sure it was 100 +. Second session didnt push as much, and the temp stayed half way bang on the entire time, the drive back home was the same. I would suspect, you are running just perfect in your car.
    Enjoy the ride !

Have you checked the oil lines on the 911 for kinks? I replaced all my oil lines with Elephant Racing ribbed lines, replaced the oil cooler with ER's widemouth cooler, added a oil cooler scoop and oil cooler pull fan. 100 degree weather with the a/c on in traffic and I rarely go over 100 degrees Celcius.

What condition is the "foam" sealant on top (hood) and the sides of the radiator? Wondering if that radiator sealing is worn, fans may partially blow past (over&around) radiator when forward motions is limited/slow.

This 79 308 runs at speed just right of the mid tick mark (+/-180 degrees). Getting it on driving winding 2nd 3rd gear two lane roads @ 4-6K rpm in 90 degree weather raises temp just right of the mid tick (195 degree) mark to +/-200 degrees.

Just replaced water pump and it took three thermoswitchs ($15) to find one that works reliably. Radiator isolating with sealant around body is a work in progress here.

Other thing to check (and this maybe obvious, but you never know) is have you completely bled the cooling system of air?

I don't think Ive done 113 degrees in my GT4, but high 90's and stuck in stop-and go traffic, and never had a problem with my cooling.

Ambient temp Mid to upper 90's, running up in the hills at altitude. Here were my high readings for aqua and olio.

Temps tweaked up just slightly higher in stop/go after the ride. Perhaps just to the right edge of the 'zero' in the 90 for aqua and just to the right edge of the '100' for olio. That was the max I have seen so far.

The foam is in great shape. The air is bleed out of the system. I have no problems in 95 degree weather, but when the weather is over 110? PFFFFT! Hair dryer set on hot is what is being blown into my radiator! The car does not overheat, but it gets very hot when I push the car in that kind of heat. I have it filled with nothing but distilled water and water wetter.

On another note, I hear that a good 50 weight oil does not really start doing its job well until about 210 degrees F.

I found that replacing the fan with a modern flat pancake fan 2500cfm and water/red line water wetter no antifreeze and upping the cap to a 1.1bar the temps barely get to straight up in 100*+ days and traffic.

I ran across the desert on hwy5 in 100*+ temps for 6hrs at 90mph avg and the coolant barely got off the 1/4 mark ! switched the cap back to the 0.9bar and the temps on the return drive was just below the 1/2 mark.

so for hot days I run the 1.1 cap and on avg/cool days it's the 0.9.

Yea summer driving in Phoenix in rush hour traffic can be a *****. I upgraded the radiator, built a shroud with 2 12 in fans. Besides upgrading the waterpump I think i've done all I can do to keep the engine cool. (Seems to work) But as for the rest of the car ... I think its melting. :)

Think I'll reserve summer driving to early mornings and nights ... or stick it in for service work.
