    Hi All,

I have been on the hunt for a nice low mileage 1989 328 GTS…..in a color other than Red/Tan. Red/Tan is awesome make no mistake and my last 328 GTB was Red/Tan…so I thought I would try something different this time. I have found two prime candidates:

    1) Black/Black
    2) White/Tan

    Quick Poll to ask:

    A) If you were to choose between Black/Black or White/Tan, which would you pick?
    B) Any down side to either?

The only down side to Black I can think of is tiny abrasions and/or scratches….I have seen many black cars of all makes and they seem to show the tiniest little scratches the most…more so than other colors.....The downside to white is possible resale value….. But if I never sell the car who cares right? I plan to keep this 328 and will it to my daughter once I “go to the rose peddles” as my Grandma used to say. I also think white is the best color for not showing little abrasions and/or scratches.

So some thoughts from the crowd on this one…which would you choose from the above?

As of May this year, I am the new proud owner of a 87 white/tan 328 GTSi. Love it - I've been partial to white cars all along. It sits beside my white/tan BMW. As a purchaser - great for me, as your right - limited # may want this combo but for originality and something different - I think it looks great - cooler in the summer than the black. I have only polished it with McGuires and it looks good. May show the dirt a bit more but I always hear black is tougher to maintain and does show some marks. Best of luck in your search - you can see a pic of mine on my profile.

I think white/tan would work in some areas, but you don't see many white cars in these parts and it just wouldn't feel right to me.

I have seen come 308s that are black with red interior that I liked. Not sure 328s came like that.

Black looks better to me, but is prone to show defects more like you say. Have you seen both in person? I have found these cars look very different in person than they do in pictures. White is more practical which seems anathema to the Ferrari purchase.

I love 'off' color Ferraris, but in this case I would keep looking, but if I had to choose it would be the white with tan, I just don't like black Ferraris, the color hides all the nice lines, also very hard to maintain properly. White looks great and is much easier to maintain.

The black/black would be (and was) my choice. Proper care and it will look fine. Mine has 52K miles and lives in Alaska. Original paint looks fine, and touch up rock chips with a Sharpie marker or black Honda touch up paint.

I even bought it in Mill Valley five years ago.

As well as Dave, I have Black on Black too. My 997s is also Black on Black. My previous cars, 645 Cab, Black on Black and XJR Black on Black. I just like it. Though I would consider other colors. You should do some research because Dave and I feel that there were only 25 Black on Black 1989 328 GTS's made. I believe that I have the last one that was shipped here. I met a guy recently who told me that he's been looking for a Black on Black (1989) for a while and has not had any luck. Check out the registry. Last time I looked there were only four Black on Black. White may be just as rare, but I would go with Black or Red. In my opinion, with some of the other colors the car tends to look dated because of all the black grills. On Black it justs blends in nicer.

I've owned two black Ferraris, and two black-on-black sportscars overall. I'm either a glutton for punishment, or an idiot. Black, for me, kinda sucks. It shows dirt/swirl marks/paint blemishes VERY easily. You'll be spending LOTS of time trying to keep it clean vs. driving it. In the HOT CA sun, a black interior will get hot - even with you in it. Black absorbs solar energy. A black cockpit, on a bright, sunny day, is not a comfortable place to be without large amounts of ventilation - and Ferraris are not well-known for adequate climate control. Even black-interiored 355s get uncomfortably hot - I sat in one from South Carolina to Canada one summer. I'd give my right arm for a fresh, new, supple Connolly Tan interior.....

and you even for got her number.. #62091! Love the look of the black cars but for AZ, white is easier to maintain. A black car out here gets dirty just by opening up your garage door.

Just bought a white tan 87. I can't give much more feedback beyond that because I haven't even seen it in person yet. The white to me was soo much sexier and exotic. I had always plan to buy black tan but once I saw this, it was perrrrfect.

Anyway, there is a white tan 88.5 for sale in oregon or denver for 39k. It's a good car but needs a major as well as some issues with the first gear synchro. But 39k for an 88.5? Sounds good.... if you want more details PM me.

If Gary is correct then I'm one of the lucky 25 to own a black/black '89 328. I love the color combo, and, with minimal effiort (weekly wash/bi-monthly wax), have had no problems wharsoever with keeping the paint looking like new or with the seats becoming unbearably hot. Notwithstanding that my daily driver is a red/tan Porsche, to me the ONLY color for a Ferarri is black. IMHO it is more elegant than white (or red). I think white looks good on German cars, but not Italian. That being said, I must admit that the white cars pictured on this thread look rather nice (however not as nice as the black ones).

My daily is a Porsche too (C2S cab). I use to have a problem with keeping black looking right without any swirl marks. If you know what your doing, you won't have any. Menzerna (and Blackfire) makes a great cleaner and a Polish. Its acrylic so it holds up better then Carnuba and I don't have any swirl marks. My 911 is Black and no swirls. My wife drives a Porsche too, dark blue Mettalic, no swirls. There are so many great products out there that did not exist years ago. I would agree that black interior gets hot, but any interior in a Ferrari gets hot! The engine is 6 inches from your neck! In reality black makes every car look good. Not saying it because I have black, but Crappy Korean cars in black look good. Camrys in black look good. Black is Beautiful!

Look. No Swirls. My brother was trying out a new camera, so we took a picture of his DB9 and my 328. A little secret...the 328 was sexier.

Black/tan is probably the sharpest color scheme on any sports car, but the comments here about dust and swirls are true.

Given how Surfermark keeps his cars, however, I think he'd find black perfectly acceptable and more rewarding. For a daily driver, I've had black cars and they're very high maintenance.

If you can find black metallic (my car above), it looks nearly black but is far more forgiving of swirlies.

No secret whatsoever. The 328 is a much better looking car.

The DB9 is handsome, but 10 years from now it will be gone and people will have to read the badge to know what it is. Kids will still be shouting "Ferrari!" whenever a 328 shows up.

You are the best writer on F Chat! By the way, I'm a huge fan of Black not Mettallic Black. When the sun hits it, you see every imperfection.
