Would you like to have a laptop that is:

    - Able to run 10 hours on a charge and can be recharged several different ways in the field?
    - Has a very rugged case but can still be configured in clamshell or tablet mode?
    - Has a display that is truly readable in full sunlight or indoors?
    - Provides full web connectivity through wireless access, even if your laptop is out of range of a wireless hotspot?
    - Has an open-source OS and application software that doesn't pay anything to Microsoft?
    - But still has a standard suite of productivity tools?
    - Enables new collaboration models that don't even exist in corporate environments?
    - Is field repairable for a few bucks?
    - And... costs $100-175?!

    Here it is:

But we can't buy it, we don't meet the qualifications! We'll have to wait for these innovations to trickle down to the big laptop makers. I'm impressed by the XO project. Bravo!

this is probably waht keeps the costs down. laptops are already around $500..take away all the licensing fees, and costs go down for both the manufacturer and the consumer.
