What would happen to F1 if Ferrari quit ?

F1 wouldn't last a minute without Ferrari, would have the fate of CART, for Ferrari there would be many option, from the Le Mans and we should remember that in other eras Ferrari had the prototypes privileged over the F1 competition, the presence of Ferrari in any kind of competition would elevate the interest for other constructors to enter, or even the creation of a new GP series with other constructors...without the need of having pimps as Eccle$tone.

Ferrari brings a lot to the pot, but they take a lot back too.
F1 would continue on nicely without them, in not sure that the same could be said about Ferrari - yes they'd survive, but they do rely at least partly on the "free" advertising - for a while they would be able to run solely on the ferrari mystique and reputation, but after a period of time they would neeed to re assurte themselves back into some form of motorsport and if it was F1 they would need to go back cap in hand to Bernie et al and ask for re entry.

theres plenty of other types of racing and ferrari have entered a fair few of them. I agree that the company use racing in many markets as advertising and it helps build up a decent fanbase, but as i said there are other forms of racing and indeed other forms of advertising.

On that note its worth mentioning that in all fairness F1 isnt that big in the USA by all accounts and Ferrari manage to sell a lot of cars there, it cant all be down to F1 can it ???

in case you've forgotten Ferrari is a european company.
and whilst the US is indeed their biggest market dont forget that most countries have waiting lists - if interest slumped over the pond they could easily sell elsewhere.

Sure, I have no doubt average team spending would go down - but business respond to changing markets all the time. The team who responds the best starts winning.

I have no doubt Ferrari could continue to exist without F1. Hell, their profits would probably go up. Ferrari's largest market doesn't care about F1 - simple as that.

 

i know for a fact i wouldnt watch f1 if ferrari left. i dont think many people would. when u think of f1 u think of ferrari not mclaren. nobody cares for mclaren. mclaren doesnt even built there own engines. i love f1 but i love ferrari more.

I feel a lot the same right now - but let's be realistic here. Mercedes was arguably one of the most dominant makes in racing, given the whole of the 20th century.

They stone cold quit all of racing, just like GM did, just like Maserati did, just like Alfa did, and nothing happened to the racing venue. Somebody else just stepped up to fill the void.

I hope everybody realized that my remarks above, including NASCAR, were really said in jest and mostly out of frustration.

I think Ferrari should start inquiring to other teams about leaving F1 and forming their own formula series. I personally hope this happens some day since the FIA is adamant about killing the spirit of the sport.

Most Ferrari people I know are aware of Ferrari in racing, yet they have not watched an F1 race - EVER.

And there are a lot of Ferrari buyers out there right now that have not seen an F1 race in eons.

Ferrari has never been truly competitive in any other from of racing since the mid-60's except F1, they
had a decent endurance car - except it lacked endurance, compared to the Porsches.

They sell a lot of Corvettes and Vipers, but I have never seen one in a race, really.

 

But Ferrari is damned close - and might be.

You think of all the sports in the world, name a team in the NFL, and you will get conflicting results, same with the NBA, and MLB, NHL, nascar, IRL, all of 'em.

 

I would stop watching F1 if Ferrari pulled out. Does anyone actually find the "racing" exciting thesedays in F1?

F1 would survive but it would lose prestige/money w/o Ferrari.

Don't forget Ferrari has won in other forms of racing; I'd love to see them get back into factory sportscars......

 

You got a point - I have not seen ANY F1 racing this year at all, and until more than 4 cars get competitive, I have no desire to pay for another tier of cable tv just to see it.
Yes, they have won in other forms of racing, but in all honesty - not much. For every 1 endurance race win Ferrari has, Porsche has about 12.
On the other hand, for every F1 win Ferrari has, Porsche has....... well, the TAG/Mclaren in 1983-86 (?) I 'spose.

And to clarify another point: Ferrari does not get 'free advertising' by being in F1 - spending 300 million a year on the team is definitely NOT 'free advertising'.

Porsche I believe has 2 GP wins in which it manufactured the entire car-and one was a non-championship event. They were over 40 years ago.....We won't talk about the disasterous Indycar program nor the horrible V-12 they designed for the Footwork Arrows team...

Ferrari dropped out of factory supported sportscar racing because they were spreading themselves too thin and chose to dedicate themselves to F1; I think if they dropped out of F1 and concentrated on other forms of racing they would do well. I remember Mario Andretti talking about why the 512 was never as good as the 917-he said the 512 was very good but Ferrari never spent the time/money developing it further...

Remember, F1 use to be the ultimate form of motor racing from a technology standpoint-it still is in terms of aeros but what happened to the simple rules of 3000cc, etc. without regard to the number of cylinders? Cosworth V-8s, Ferrari flat 12s, Matra V-12s. I miss those days. Rev limitations? Spare me...

 

I agree. Ferrari will not pull out regardless of the contracts with the sponsors ( think of Marlboro's money, etc. ) and therefore will fight fiercely for the championship.

Although Luca is not "Enzo, the red pope" he is thought of as "the fox", ...think of how he pulled out FIAT from the doldrums after collecting 1 billion from GM not exercising the option to buy ( I and everybody else still don't understand how that came about...I thought GM had the upper hand...and that deal was done very quietly).
Luca said publicly to all Ferrari fans "This is not over yet" and therefore he cannot afford to let down Ferrari and all its fans.

I think the greater question what could Ferrari do that would bring it as much free publicity? not that it needs it... An Attack on Le Mans, ALMS, FIA GT & Prototypes... perhaps IRL & CART in the USA... you probbably could do all that for the same amount they spend in F-1. Schumacher could race at Le Mans... put Massa in IRL, and Riakkonen in CART... they all three could do ALMS... think of all the direct promotions! Marlboro would hate it cause its not advertizing in Asia, India, etc... emerging markets.

So they will stay where they are, probbably loose to Mclaren, and next year nobody will care. For The FIA and its decison... I'm not supprised at all... its typical the brits have it in their pocket... they need how to make this good for TV then let the gloves come off.

Ferrari IS NOT F-1, but F-1 IS FERRARI... with out them, who will want to watch? A Mercedes battle aBMW, Honda, Toyota, Renault? you can walk out your door and see that!

As for our cheating friends at McLaren.... Dennis will get his in the end...Maybe Mercedes will make him buy back the company and leave him hi & dry... I never could like that man, still dont, and most likely never will. the fact that they knew that they had this info, and did not rat out Stephney when this broke... just shows you where they are.... ( Cheating is also part of the sport... thats where all the technical stuff comes from ...) when your caught you should pay for it... Lotus did, ( dual suspension car ) Brabham did ( Fan Car ) Ferrari has too... ( Double front wings on the back at Long beach 82 ) .... if your car is not legal... then you cant race... if you steal someones plans and build their car and develop it...I dont think you car is legal either! was that not the whole Honda - Super best friends scandal??? with F-1 All I say is............. with Ferrari out, spending would decrease, in a dramatic way. Porsche would see this as the perfect opportunity to jump in and run a team, maybe in cahoots with Audi.

Seriously, why would Ferrari pull out? Because they lost in F1 court??? Don't think this is the first time a racing team in F1 has had its feathers ruffled.

My guess? Ferrari pulls out all the stops, kicks ass the balance of the season, and squeaks out the constructor's championship.

Guess we'll all know in a couple months.

more than 50% of the people at any given race are Ferrari supporters, that is a hell of a lot of money to go west if Ferrari ever pulled out, they won't of course but the ramifications if they did would be enormous

well I can only go by the Australian, British and Italian GPs but the Aust and British were still about 50% and naturally the Italian one was well in excess of 80% with the rest seemingly being Senna fans (at the '89 GP when Senna's engine went kablooee just before the Parabolica where I was)

They grew balls and had factory programs in racing series other than, and sometimes in addition to, F1. You know, like LeMans and FIA GT.
