how much of an unfair advantage does it need to be? since F1 is tenths and hundreths of a second...well...any unfair advantage is advantage enough.

Semantics .... It was still outside the intention of the rules, otherwise the FIA would not have made it illegal. This happens all the time and does not always result in a penalty.

Ferrari, correctly, are not squeaky clean and naive in reading the rules ... otherwise they would never have won anything.

McLaren has an advantage in speed over BMW because they have better engineers who have more experience and a greater base of legacy knowledge. That's a fair advantage.

not semantics at all, just ask Honda about their small fuel tank that cost them , or the barge board issue that 'nearly' cost Ferrari the WCC in '99

semantics is where it doesn't matter one way or the other but in FIA rulings it matters VERY much so ...... except for where you've got the full season information of the opposing team where the most minute insight will give you an advantage and tip the scales in your favour if you use it to your advantage which I'm sure McL would never do
