front license plate

plead guilty, and pay the ticket by mail, problem solved, don't let the law get between you and your beautiful car. No front plate. I get 1 a year, small price to pay for having a ferrari

Anybody know about Euro plate availability?

PS--I saw the post with the Texas legal code--I still may try a Euro plate and see if the next cop lets me slide...

 

Problem in CA is you have to fix it and drive it over the police station.

Otherwise, for $15, I'd just keep pre-printed checks in the car made out to the county and hand one over to the officer whenever I got stopped.

What happens if when stopped you get puzzled look on your face, get out and look at the front spoiler and say:

I can't believe my plate isn't there! It was there the last time I looked

 

We had a front plate law in NY and I never put them on any of my cars. I always had it in the door pocket or under the seat and put it on the dash when parked or on the rare meeting with a cop and it was never an issue. Guess it depends on the officer, but I would take the fine once in awhile over putting that ugly plate on the car!

 

When I was living in Seattle I got nailed for no front plate on the Porsche. I found a site called www.europlates.com ordered my washington plate combo and the popo left me alone.

Mine went llike this. WA 319-NAZ My was the German Plate, but they have Italian and Great Britian as well

Of course now that I am in Kentucky they don't issue front plates.

Unless you have already mounted a U.S. plate and your car overheated you cannot say it will cause the car to overheat. I too would not be keen on blocking any portion of a radiator but it does not automatically mean it will overheat.

Many U.S. states and other countries mandated front plates long before the introduction of laser or radar speed checks so it is not the real reason. I will agree that some U.S. states have no doubt re-thought their front plate policy to assist speed checks and that could be behind their new interest in front plates.

Incidentally, in Germany and some other countries the front plate is needed, along with the driver's face, in the photograph (in the case of photo radar) in order to issue a ticket/prosecute. Photo radar photographs (or any radar/laser) are not done of the back of a vehicle because you cannot see the driver's face to make positive I.D. In other words, as far as I have seen, you are never "shot" with radar or laser from the rear. Anyway, the point is that the front plate here is not for laser aiming purposes either (although it can be used for that), instead it is to help provide positive I.D.

I too would love to not have to have front plates as they mess-up the look of a lot of cars and as you mention can get in the way of radiators.

I'm not pro-radar and I believe common sense and attention are much more important than strictly obeying posted speed limits.

unfortunately here in socal, the intersection cameras do shoot the front and rear of the car. i got such a ticket last year in the mail. they have you coming and going. i recommend these to combat it:

Since you don't know my car, AND you don't live in/abide by US laws, I'll let you slide. However, ANYTHING blocking the movement of air through a radiator WILL cause problems with the cooling system. Period. Its not rocket science. Front grill openings are of a certain size and diameter for a reason. My vehicle is currently experiencing overheating issues at low speeds, and several local Ferrari-related experts have attributed my overheating situation to airflow problems with the front radiator.

 

Your statement "ANYTHING blocking the movement of air through a radiator WILL cause problems with the cooling system." is too broad. It is an oversimplification unless you are talking about your specific car. It may cause a slight reduction in cooling ability, it may cause quite a reduction in cooling ability or it could cause major problems. It depends on how large a section of the radiator is being blocked, the ambient temperature, rpm's and certainly the condition of your cooling system. There is little doubt in my mind that if you currently have overheating conditions at low speeds you have a bigger problem than just some blockage by a portion of the license plate (if you have one installed). So, yes, then any further blockage would only contribute to the problem.

Over the years I have seen numerous cars with all manner of things blocking portions of the radiators (big driving lights etc.) and they did not have overheating problems. Again, it depends on the factors I mentioned previously.

I agree, I do not know your specific car's condition. No need to let me slide. I lived many years in the U.S., drove in the U.S., obeyed U.S. traffic laws (and sometimes didn't ;-)

 

Drive around with the plate in the hidden position. Then when the cop is getting out of his car behind you, push a button which reveals the plate.

Then when he says, "Where's your front license plate?"

I seem to recall Mythbusters trying that thing, or one very similar to it, and found it didn't work. Ah yes, here it is.

 

Okay, here's a solution..... move to Italy (never a bad idea and get an old style Italian front license plate. Almost guaranteed not to cause any problems. Yes, that's a real, full-size, old school Italian front plate on my Lancia. Incidentally, I had a serious over-heating problem a year ago on the car. Even at idle it would run slightly hot with the radiatior fan never turning off. I replaced the 25 year old radiator and now it's as right as rain (and still using the 25 year old water pump).
