Yeah there were others in the past, but I wanted to bump again. This subject came up at an Fchatter's house a few weeks ago with a friend that I did not know was a Muay Thai instructor. So I thought I'd bump to see what people thought were the trends. Recently I bumped in to the star of Ong Bak in Paris and thought his sequences without aide of wires were amazing.

I am active in Muay Thai and Kenpo right now, ****o Ryu, Jiujitsu, Tae Kwon Do, and various forms of Kung Fu in the past. I have barely touched on the Gracie bros. style because I know Royce through an ex ;)

While many of the Japanese ares are defensive and teach a fluid motion, I enjoy Thai style a little more as purely offense.

    What's your flavor?

Started martial arts when I was a kid. I was about 6 years old then. I don't have any interest in martial arts but I had to do it to be able to learn how to protect myself because I was always one of the smallest of the group.

I did karate for about 5 years, and got my blackbelt. Then I stopped for a while. I got into Jiu-Jitsu when I was 14. I kind of stop again then went back in but now I do boxing. So far so good! :)

If anyone is in SoCal and wants a sparring partner, I am free in Pasadena or the west side.

I did American Open System for a couple years...

it was basically a mix of boxing/kickboxing/muay thai/Jui Jitsu/ and one or two more... so I got a lot of different styles.

Muay Thai and Jui Jitsu were my favorite.

Anyone do Krav Maga? There's a studio down the street from me I'm interested in. Looks like good, practical stuff.

It is what seems to be a more practical street fighting approach. While Japanese martial arts are very rigid and over structured a-b-c-d-e moves, KM, Eskrima, and Savate are more free-form.

I know, it would just seem rather miraculous should you be able to finish a karate or even kung fu movement with your opponent in anything near the same position... you watch many karate practioners spar and it's like you're back on the 4th grade playground swinging and flailing.

I just want to BOOT TO THE HEAD, HUH!

Studied Taekwondo for 6 years or so, got my 2nd degree black belt. Quit around the age of 15 It became too repetitive and I wanted to start doing crazy things like XMA (Extreme Martial Arts) style moves but they couldn't teach me that. I'm 22 now and considering Krav Maga, my old school is teaching it and it just looks like something that is effective and to the point.

I've jumped around a lot, but have not done any serious training in the last 6 years or so, so i'm really out of shape :p

i've trained in the following styles, but really only went through and finished one; I got my Nidan in Shorin-Ryu back in '01, and stopped practicing when I went off to college. I competed in a lot of regional, nat'l and int'l tournaments, travelling and all that good stuff [Compete nationals, bluegrass nationals, US Open, Diamond Nats] but when XMA started coming on the scene, I wasnt into competing with all the flash -- I had strong basics and was real good with the traditional stuff, so I wasn't about to learn a lot of useless tumbling. I still competed and still won for a long time after XMA came in, and worked them in sparring competition, too :)

    Judo
    Olympic TKD
Muay Thai [I'd love to learn Muay Boran or Muay Chaiya]
    Iaido

many years ago i studied with a fellow who had been studing with the founder of the style of jeet kun do. it translates to the style of no style. i always felt it had a doctrine that allowed the practicioner to assimilate techniques that worked best for them. there are many good styles but i wonder about the more commercial styles. i see these competitions where they look more like acrobats or dancers than fighters. i suppose it's my old school brain resisting change.

yes, the fellow i studied under had trained with him in california. i was a student learning mo du kwan and aikido and he was visiting with one of the ranking belts at the school. i was lucky enough to workout with him for about six months or so. very heady stuff. very effective. really gave me an insight into interpreting the arts, and a few bruises.
