Guys, the Gulf Oil Corporation that sponsored the GT40s, 917s, etc. doesn't exist anymore and hasn't since it was acquired by Chevron in 1984. The brand images were later sold by Chevron and now appear to be owned by some sort of firm that licenses the logo and certain intellectual property for retail petroleum-related marketing purposes around the world. Still, the colors look nice on a sports racing car.

Wow, that Gulf F430 looks hideous! Either ditch the red or ditch the Gulf blue. Blech!

More importantly, no one is discussing another RSR team switching to F430s. Certainly another feather in the F430 cap at the expense of Porsche, I assume due to the success the F430 is having against the RSR.

Is Porsche going to do anything about this? Rumors of an RSR upgrade-kit abound, but only time will tell.

A new sequential gearbox is on the way for the new 911 GT3 RSR.

Hartmut Kristen is the head of Porsche Motorsport.

"Says Kristen: with the increased wheelbase, crankcase versus gearbox input shaft angularity increases. Heat increases. The new gearbox will relocate the output shafts, lower the center of gravity, reduce the angularity, and equate to a horsepower increase due to reduced friction and reduced heat."

It doesn't help having the engine in the rear though. Porsche has said they won't race the Cayman.

    autoweek.com: June/1/2005

Contrary to hints of a lightweight racing version of the new Boxster-based mid-engined Cayman coupe (AW, May 30), Porsche research and development officials in Weissach insist there is no club sport or stripped-for-racing Cayman in the works.

"The racing edge of Porsche is, and will remain, the 911," said chief engineer Wolfgang Durheimer. "No production car will supplant it anytime soon. There is no plan for a Cayman intended for racing at any level."

The 2006 Cayman S is powered by a new 3.4-liter version of Porsche's horizontally opposed six, generating 295 hp, or 15 more than the current Boxster S. The Cayman S will be the high-trim, top-output coupe variant. Another Cayman in development - a standard model with less equipment than that of the S - is likely to be powered by a 3.0-liter, 260-hp boxer six. That version may not go on sale for more than a year after the launch of the Cayman S.

Cayman S debuts at the Frankfurt motor show this fall and goes on sale in the United States by spring 2006.

PWL in the ALMS and the Ice Pol Racing Team in the LMS have switched from 911s to F430s. PWL has Michelin tires while Ice Pol has Pirellis.

Team Kawamura from the Japanese Le Mans Challenge (same four classes as ALMS and LMS but the P2 cars aren't P2 cars at all) switched from a Porshe 911 GT3R to a new F430. They have Michelin tires.

    Curse their stubborn, 911-centric attitudes!

I hope they continue to lose.

Paintjob on the 430 kind of looks half done. Although not a classic Gulf livery (not a complete job), it didn't look too bad on this one. ;)
