IMHO. When thinking about the two most wealthy people in the world, It brings to mind the concept of trying to fill the ocean one grain of sand at a time. Both ideas become meaningless once you see the futility of trying to give reason to either. Once either death or the tide comes along, none of it matters. At the moment of final equity, neither tide nor banking have any impact on the eternal movement of the universe. Except, that long after the creation of wealth or the ability to spend it all, vanishes; the tides will function. That is, until it is deemed to cease, and cease it will.

With the recent market downturn Slim is no longer the richest man in the world. Welcome back Gates...

I think it's more of how wants to be philanthropist.

According to the Fortune article (lastest issue):

"What form will that take exactly? The Slims' three main foundations have roughly $4 billion today, and they've pledged at least another $6 billion over the next several years. Among the causes: institutes for health and education, each seeded with $500 million to start. Slim has been a big backer of Nicholas Negroponte's One Laptop Per Child initiative, and Bill Clinton recently convinced Slim to donate at least $100 million to his foundation's efforts to reduce poverty in Latin America. He also has invested heavily in refurbishing Mexico City's Centro histórico, or downtown. That said, the family tends to embrace economic development rather than donations as a way of eradicating poverty. "I think the best way to help people is not to give them money but to give them a job," says Marco Antonio. "We support education, health, and employment - that's what people need for a better life." Carlos Sr. caught a lot of flak from the Mexican press and U.S. commentators earlier this year when he was quoted as saying that he had no intention of "going around like Santa Claus" distributing his wealth.

Indeed, Slim seems to have a slightly different view of how he might give back. A few years ago he won an award from the World Education and Development Fund for his work on infrastructure in the developing world. His entire family accompanied him to the dinner in New York City. In his acceptance speech, Slim explained his life's work: "Many people want to leave a better world for their children," he told the crowd. "I'm trying to leave better children for my world."

I actually agree with him. I mean, a lot of charities aren't the greatest managers of money and allocation of assets in the world. Of course, it's a tough coming from him.

Until you can put together a coherent thought, I'd recommend backing away from the keyboard.

He's s*cked so much money out of Latin America that he needs to 'prime the pump' to s*ck out more? Must be nice.

This is a bunch of crap on Slim's side. If Slim really "embraced economic development.. for erradicating poverty" he would not push and bribe Mexican authorities to keep his juicy phone company monopoly and allow for legal competition to enter the market like any other place in the world.

Slim is a brilliant investor and manager but his big jump in fortune stems getting his hand on a monopoly and being able to keep it. Sure he donates a bunch of money but it's all by ripping off consumers especially in Mexico.

+1. In his younger days, Slim made his money legitimately. But the "privatization" of TelMex and other state industries mirrored what happened in Russia with the oligarchs. International telephone rates in and out of the country are ridiculous. Nothing will change until the monopoly is broken.

Oh, I agree with you. I just agree with his charitable approach. If he means it, I don't know. It's hard to allow a challenged region like Latin American to create upward mobility in terms of entreprenuership, employment growth, and wealth when you have a strangle on core industries that can help develop these things.
