As my first vintage car, which one do you guys recommend:

    1) Fully restored Ferrari 330 GTC;
    2) Fully restored Ferrari 365 GBT/4 Daytona; or
    3) F40 with less than 1,000 miles?

Personally, I don't consider the f40 vintage, so I'd choose the daytona from that group if you want a vintage experience. The f40 will go down as one of the great street/track ferraris of all time, but being built in the late 80s puts it in the modern era by at least 10 years. Forgetting the "vintage" stuff, I'd choose the f40 hands down from that group of three.

Interesting as I was pondering a similar thought, friend is mine is looking for an older Ferrari to complement his soon to arrive 599.

Options in no particular order are
365BB, very difficult to find in SA
    365 GTB/4 Daytona
    246 Dino

Any other suggestions, isnt interested in something like a 308 or suchlike and F40's are out of the question based on the prices they command here.

At the moment the Boxer is top of the list based on the fact its still quick even today and has a classic shape, the Dino will be far to fragile for the way this friend of mine drives.

Are you asking which car provides the best experience for the money?

If it helps, I find I use "driver" quality cars more than "show" quality cars - I just relax more in the former.

Also find that older cars can provide more fun at lower speeds than can newer cars. Having tall skinny tires, a big wooden steering wheel and no brakes means you can find thrills at almost any corner.

I love my F40, but it doesn't do that much for me at subdivision speeds. You want to be able to get the turbos working; hard to do that for more than short bursts.

Just a thought, since you are not going for performance (you have the modern cars for that), I would suggest a 2+2 (250GTE, 330 America, 330 2+2), excellent driving characteristics, can take friends along, best bang for the buck.

Alternately, if you have the money, get a convertible - 250 PF cab, 275 GTS or 330 GTS.

    Regards,

    Art S.

I'd go for the GTC. Daytona is a great car but at $100 big ones more, not justifiable if I were looking.

For Daytona money, I'd go for a 275 GTS, but $325K would probably only get a driver grade car if you were lucky.

An F40 is totally out of my universe...no comment.

I think the answer hinges on what kind of drive you want that "once in a while" to be...

If you want something that is equally up for a spirited jaunt as well as a relaxing bit of escape - I think the F40 is pretty much ruled out. For my taste, I think the Daytona would fit the bill.

As someone who made a similar (sans the F40) choice three years ago, after about two years of looking at and driving lots of cars (good insurance against buyer's remorse), I bought the best 330GTC I could find and haven't regretted it for a moment. Only you know what your real budget is, how you want to use the car and, in the end, what turns your crank. Have fun looking, make an informed decision (with a little passion and instinct thrown in) buy a good car and enjoy it for what it is.

    Jack.

What about a 365 GTC- more scarce, more powerful, but more money?

I say Daytona for a vintage Ferrari, although i would rather an F40. I don't think he's price sensitive!

still one of my favorite cars of all time....prefer the looks of an early coupe euro - of course (side marker lights - yuck on the US models...headlight covers, and front 'flush' parking lights....

Actually a 206 GT with knockoffs would be puuuurfect!

    just my 2 cents!

or do the BEST thing and go over to the dark side and acquire a Countach - best choice of all!

Exactly....F40 is not "vintage" But I'd pick that in a heartbeat.

Not to mention how the prices are going CRAZY as of late!

Out of the list that you gave, I would vote for Daytona. If I could suggest the greatest "attainable" vintage Ferrari IMO for occasional road use, the 288 GTO. I have a Daytona, 288 GTO and F40 for a few years now and my conviction about the 288 GTO simply grows with time. My Daytona was my first vintage Ferrari and is going up in my estimation also. It is a deadly cool car for small money
