Last two years have entered the category "Classic Tour" where the rules are that cars stay within the speed limits. (yeah right)

This year have moved into the "Thoroughbred Tour" category where the maximum speed in closed sections is 130 km/hr and helmets are compulsory.(again yeah right)

This "Thoroughbred Tour" is bring subsponsored by Shannons.

Previously my normal car insurance was confirmed OK for the Classic Tour but the Insurance Company advises that they will not cover me for this new category.

Have contacted Shannons who decline to insure even though they are subsponsors and am currently speaking to OAMPS, waiting their reply.

Any suggestions which insurance company would offer insurance and idea of cost?

Car is 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo say value $27500.

    Thanks

    Tony

I wouldn't bother. The cost of the premium and the size of the excess will not be worth it.
OAMPS insured a lot of cars in Targa Tasmania in the 2nd yr (?). It was carnage and they lost a ton of money. Not sure if they would have forgotten that yet.

Maybe going *without* insurance might make for better driving since if you're going to hook along you'll also have crash cost in back of mind at same time to help fine tune and keep upright as you go..

I'm nav again this year in Classic for mate with 1988 911 Clubsport in comp category and will ask him what he does for this event and let you know..

problem is accidents are just that...accidents, and unexpected

mates and i hired a car for our perth trip in 05, one was determined not to pay insurance, as he 'didnt plan to crash'

tootling around the 'burbs would be bad enough...entering a rally without cover would scare the bejeesus out of me!

Sure of course.. but it does eliminate the "open slather" of "it's ok.. it's insured" away from you.. as well as the whole (real) cost of premium+excess vs risk-of as pointed out earlier.

If it was a case of stay-at-home-on-guaranteed-soft-couch with car sitting in drive and "having a go" (with all due care and consideration) and run the risk, well I sure know if given the opportunity and choice you won't find me on that same couch in my old age glad having complete and reassuring insurance cover .. but didn't ever live a life when given the chance lol.

    +1

Had an uninsured write-off one year and even if I had insured the car each year, would not have ended up ahead.

Response back was he does not know of anyone who offers insurance for CA. He made suggestion of contacting CA organisers and seeing if they can make suggestion.

All the best for whatever you decide!

true, but thats just the opposite end of the spectrum

the above mindset, combined with uncle goober's "confusing ambitions with abilities" line can easily result in a smashed car or far far worse

personally, id be insured AND drive within my limits...still a risk...but minimised as much as possible.

Talk to Shannons again. I spoke to the business manager here in SA and was advised that any of the touring catagories were covered. Be sure and point out that it is NOT a competition section. I'm pretty sure MHH had his BM covered in the Thoroughbred section last year.

That's right. Both my M5 and the Gallardo are covered for Thoroughbred in CA. However as with all things insurance, it may not mean everyone can get this cover.

Exactly! Makes a big difference if you are in a competition section.

Generally I have my cars with Torque Underwriting for insurance.

Are your cars with Shannons for general insurance or just for the CA?

Any phone numbers or contact name within Shannons would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Tony

I have them generally insured with Shannons, not just for CA. My rep is Ron Prouse. His mobile is 0438 878 619. Only bother to ring if you are prepared to buy 12 month cover. He won't be interested in covering just the event.

Just to close the thread off.

OAMPS have quoted $665 plus excess $2750 for the five days which I reckon is quite reasonable.

    Car value for insurance $27500.

    Thank you to all respondents.
