Paint your 360 key red

I polished mine also. Not the mirror finish bill got, but close After a while it turns a dull grey, but I like the worn-in look so I don't bother clear coating it.

I use a Cape Cod polishing cloth. DO NOT use on brushed stainless steel unless you want to LOSE the brushed look. It will remove scratches so fast your head will spin. I used it for ten minutes on my key and it was almost chrome. I am NOT affiliated with them in any way. I came across this cloth while trying restore some watches I have. I dug out the spare key from the leather case and just painted it--a lot easier than polishing, that's for sure. Before I took my daughter to baseball practice I heated up the over to 250 and put the key in and turned it off, then left. I came back and pulled it out. Boy, the heat really leveled the paint a lot leaving a very nice finish. I'll post it up tomorrow. Now I have one chromed (almost) and one painted. The best of both worlds.

 

I of course have two keys, one as you know I polished really well. The other, painted with a little twist.

PIC 1. The first picture is after sanding down to 600, priming (with white primer-thanks for the tip), painting, three very thin coats.

PIC 2. This is after baking on 250 for around two hours. I turned the oven on to 250, put the key in, then turned it off and left it inside. Please look carefully and you will see the spray beads have melted together leaving a very glass finish.

PIC 3. Yeah, I painted the Pony. I considered black, but it just didn't scream Ferrari. This does! I'll leave it outside tomorrow for a thorough baking. The more heat the key gets the more it will cure and harden.

Very happy with it.

BrokenArrow....What brand of paint did you use and did you use a clearcoat after painting?

 

I used Rustoleum (spelling?) puchased at Lowes. I like to match primer and paint from the same manufacturer. Oh, and it was an enamel. They have a laquer too that may even leave a better finish, but I'm used to working with enamels so I stuck with it. I have not clear-coated it yet as I want the paint to fully cure before applying a clearcoat. Once you apply a clearcoat the enamel will not be able to breathe. Some will say it's way past curing but allowing the paint to continue to harden is important. Also, I'm not so sure I'll add a clearcoat as I don't believe it's necessary. It's so easy to paint that if (more like when) it looks messy again I'll repaint it in under an hour.

Another poster suggested using a leather string as the keychain, which I'm going to do. I'll use the leather string with the remote "inside" its leather pouch, placed in pocket with NO change, guns, knives or grenades--and no scratches. I guess the days of throwing my keys on the counter are gone. That's okay. Also, I have another key that is almost chromed that I use often. It's my toughie key.

Ok, I decided to try it.

First sanding down the paint with 200 grit followed by 600. Did not come out perfectly clean and too some elbow grease but I finally got it to where it was nicely prepped..

A couple of ligth coats of Rustoleum glossy red..and a little glue and this was my end result..

It was a little harder than I expected but not too bad..

I love this thread.

A bunch of "big-shot" (in the nicest possible way) sucessful men and women getting excited about something this simple - shows real enthusiasm and passion. I really couldn't imagine another marque generating that sort of pure passion (my current one included).

I agree. Sanding is sooo time consuming. I sanded one of my keys and it created imperfections on the metal. I used a spray-on paint stripper on the second key and it all came off easily down to bare metal. I sent it to my powdercoater and had it sprayed with "Black Chrome." Turned out so well that I had my shift paddles coated as well. The powdercoat is very resilient to scratches.

Here is mine, Polished with Cape Cod Polishing cloth and Painted the horse with Krylon Chillie pepper red with white primer. might want to try without primer next time as the detail on the horse is gone.

An update on my red painted key; it dropped off the counter and chipped so badly that it looks like a it was the sorry victim of a 12 guage. I'm going to try dipping it in that rubberized material I use to coat some of my tools. I'll post it next week. My list of things to do over the Christmas holiday is growing fast. Don't worry Ray, the lights are right up there with the brakes.

 

I'm trying to let it dry before tying the cord... I'm going to use a cord from a window shade...sorta brownish...maybe the weight will be okay...but I hope you don't mind my using your photo-backdrop idea too.... I'm happy the way this turned out...thanks!

Painting Keys red are nice but I would go for the Enzo Key

 

The Enzo key is also used on the 360 Challenge stradale one and its now unavailable from Ferrari unless you have an Enzo or CS.

 

I wonder if they come cut when you order them? If not, then anyone with a CS (hint-hint) can order one for me.
