A friend in the u.k. had a similar experience albeit in a 328gts. He was on the motorway when a lorry in front shed some of its load and he ended up going over a wooden pallet. It blew a tyre out and caused a lot of cosmetic and mechanical problems. The car was flatbedded to the home of ferrari in the u.k.-maranello. After a long wait he gets a call to say the car is ready and so it is duly delivered to his home. Being a perfectionist (it is a regional concours winner with about 15k on the clock), he has a real good look around it, and what does he find? The block itself had a hairline crack......It took a lot of phone calls etc and the involvement of an independant automotive engineers assesment before maranello and his insurance agreed on a new block for the car. If it was me that is what i would be trying to find out..any evidence of a foreign body impact on the diff housing, get a specialist to look at it.Its worth paying a few quid out even if it is a long shot. That is the problem running these cars while earning a modest salary...i always felt a bit like i had an unexploded financial bomb under me, just hoped it never went off, although it did once-what you could call a shrapnel wound £3.2k! Hope you are soon back on the road, regards,Matt

Thank you everyone for your responses! Just from your input, I have learned a lot. What a great recourse we have!!!!!!!

Sorry to post so late but I just got home from work.

Mark called me today from FOS to inform me they found that the right rear e-broke shoe assembly had somehow came apart and the spring securing pins that hold the shoe inside the hub dislodged/tumbled within the hub and seized it up.

I have the Brembo Grand Tourismo Big Brake Kit and according to Mark, getting a new hub/caliper assembly maybe tough. He said he had both the left and right side e-brake assemblies on order because both are worn down to the rivets.

In my opinion, apparently someone forgot to take the e-brake off and the car was driven in this manner at sometime. Hence, my observations of the e-brake handle out of whack to Tino.

Mark also said that the oil leak was due to the oil hose, coming from the oil reservoir to the oil pump, was leaking. I will order this part myself and R&R it when I get it home.

He said all of all fluid levels were check as customary, to include the gearbox when it arrived 9 months ago and then again today. He stated they were at the correct levels both times.

I contacted Monty, at Livermore Motorsports where I purchased the Big Brake kit a year and half ago, and he will check in the morning with Brembo NA to see if they have the hubs only in stock.

So, if you believe in “3rd time’s a charm” I hope to finally drive my car away from FOS this Saturday. Hopefully, I can enjoy the Farmer’s Almanac predicted Indian summer here in the Pacific Northwest!!!!!

It is not over until it is over!

What great news, it just goes to show that you can't jump to conclusions. I thought for sure it was a diff. problem.

It sounds like a fairly easy fix if you can source the required parts.

I just read this post and I am happy to learn that your problem wasn't that severe. I look forward to seeing you on the road with your car.

As you now know, the possible dreaded diff breakage did not materialize :), WHEW. Instead, and gratefully so, the right-rear e-brake shoes retaining pin, somehow became un-secured from the cup that holds it to the hub. It then tumbled around inside the drum and slipped a couple of times between shoe pad and drum momentarily wedging itself. This explains the hard thump as it kicked back out of the drum as the wheel was turning. It also explains why the right-rear wheel locked up because as I slowed down, the less force and momentum allowed the pin to become caught between the brake shoe and drum.

But, what remained was how the e-brake handle got so far out of adjustment since the car was dropped off over 9 months ago? This sole key indicator should have been a sign for FOS to investigate and had they did so, I feel this whole last situation could have been avoided altogether.

I will not go into detail about how this indicator was missed and not followed up on. Nor will I discuss my negotiations with FOS to have this latest part of the episode taken care of. But I will say that in the end, Tino stepped up to the plate and took care of the issue fairly and to my satisfaction, enough said.

Now even though I have not picked up the car (tomorrow at 1200hrs) and feel I am not fully out of the woods yet but, I am optimistic once more that I will finally have it to enjoy this weekend. Remember, 3rd time’s a charm…..

I do want to thank all the F-Chatters who responded with your insight, ideals and mostly for your support so far. I am amazed by the “Family” feeling you get when you are in need of help with “Our” Ferrari cars.

Again, big thanks to you all!

Just remember that in first gear at full power, over 3600 lb ft of torque is being transmitted to the differential, thats whats blowing them apart. Might not be a bad idea to ease up on these cars a bit and only let them have it in the higher gears. But then what fun would that be?

Did the insurance company step up to cover the loss?
