The 328 was the last 8-cyl two-seater Ferrari to use the horizontally mounted engine. The 348 that replaced it had the engine mounted longitudally (front-to-back instead of side-to-side). The 348 and 355 are similar designs (but look quite different due to styling). The biggest design change was when the 355 was replaced by the 360.
So, IMO, the 3 series of somewhat similar cars are:
    - 308, 308 QV, 328
    - 348, 355
    - 360, 430

Pininfarina has designed most of the Ferraris including the most recent 599 GTB.
Here is some interesting reading on Pininfarina:

Jonathan, I do not know if you called them already but Competizione has a rare EURO 308 QuatroValve in real good shape there. Call Richard or Fernando for more details 301-977-9484. I personally do not know much about the car but they can give you all the info.

I'm partial to the 328 but the 308QV is a nice car too. Nice thing about the 328s and the QV is there seems to be steady demand. I figure my 328 will hold it's value or maybe even start to go up. Probably can't say that for most of the late model cars unless you hold onto them for a real long time. Also, easy car to work on if you are the DIY type, no computers. You can also get collector car insurance on it as well if you get one 20 years or more, should drop your insurance prem more than half. My 87' uses the same fuel injection system that was on most of the Audi's/Porche/VW of the same vintage and I recently bought an exhaust check valve from NAPA for $7. Yeh, a new ZO6 would blow it away but would lose half it's value driving it off the showroom floor and I can probably get as much for my car now as I paid for it 3 years ago. If your going to take care of it I'd spend a little extra and get a nice one. Probably wouldn't have as much fun driving the Cayenne to Burtonsville on Sunday mornings but then again the 328 isn't as good for hauling groceries. Other thing to keep in mind, 328's have very narrow seats, encourages you to find a girlfriend that fits in them.

Ok so after much deliberation and searching around we found a car that might meet the current needs its a new 2006 bmw M roadster the M based on the z4 what does everyone think about this car ? the one we found is a deal its like 15k less than the cayman s,

from all the research we've done I think it's not quite time for the fcar yet i think maybe next year. or maybe 2 years we shall see the finances will be more capable of maintaining one then and also after driving the 550 I really did enjoy it and I think it might be a better first f car but I can't part with 110k for a car responsibly right now :( so based on what was said about the 308/328 we thought maybe a newer car with similar performance capabilities hence the M.

oh thanks very much to everyone that responded thanks for the all the help and advice its been invaluable it really helped us find something good for us :).

the sound the m roadster makes is way way better than the Porsche cayman S, a Ferrari it is not but I think it can fill in the gaps :) if anyone cares I will get some pictures of it if and when we get it.

Of course we care...post the pics when you get them.

I am surprised you are comparing hte M roadster to the Cayman S, I would think if you were considering a roadster you would be looking at the boxster. I do love the M, I am just not sure how I feel about the interior. The first gen M coupe was one of my favorite cars, I still want to pick one of those up some day.

If you go by the Cayman's price being ~$70K and you take off $15K you are in a nice 993 or 996 Turbo range.

Looks like you've already made your decision.

As someone else mentioned, the Boxster S is a better comparison, since it's a roadster too. Here's a nice article from Automobile mag to get you excited about your new M Roadster:

    http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/convertibles/0605_2007_bmw_z4_2006_porsche_boxster_s/

Although they prefer the Boxster S in the article, you can read it, then argue that your choice is the better car, in your opinion.

Either way, you've got a great car... enjoy! (And best of luck in getting your first Ferrari)

    Very nice... congrats again! :D

I would race you in my SLK... but I don't have the AMG version! :(

I added so many options and packages that it cost me the same amount as the base AMG version... maybe I should've gotten the AMG version instead? (Wait don't answer that, I'm sure you'll recommend the Z4 instead... :) )

    Drive safe!

hehe, do you have the slk 350 ? we almost bought that car but we wanted more power the slk 350 had 268hp but we liked the looks better but it weighed 3800+ pounds the m roadster is 3700 pounds with 330hp. we didn't want the AMG because of the 7 speed automatic we like to row the gears plus the sound of the bmw M engine is sublime the Mercedes doesn't have the same song. we still have the Mercedes c230kompressor which has the old slk engine its the 4 cyl though and it sounds like a truck or something lol. the newer v6 Mercedes engines do sound better.

anyhow so far so good with the M roadster I've already managed to put 151 miles on it !

Yep, I got the 2007 SLK350 with all the premium packages and other options, including the illuminated door sills.

    See 360-degree pics here:
    http://benzfanz.com/360View.asp

I also had a 2004 C230 Kompressor before that, but I don't have it anymore. (It met a bad fate during a brief encounter with another car at an intersection followed by a follow-up meeting with a pole)

    See attached pic below.

Have you been to any of the car meets in our area? I've met with the people on mbworld.org, East Coast Euro (no longer there, but I think EuroModder is their replacement), and also with the SupraForums Maryland car meet.

    Later.

no worries.. at least no one was seriously hurt, the insurance company took care of things quickly, and my trusty old 2001 pontiac GrandAm served me well (and it still does, as my beater car), until I got the 07 SLK last year...

The Pontiac is still running well, but the SLK has over 15,000 miles already!

were still rocking an 08 taurus its paid for so why sell it :) though with the 325i and the c230 we almost never drive it we have been using the taurus as an experiment car doing all the work ourselves to learn, we learned how to do alternators, serpinine belts sway bar end links, and many other minor things :)

that's cool man.. is your significant other a car person like you then?

i can't get mine interested in cars as much as I like them... she enjoys driving, but mostly likes being driven. :)

And back to the topic: I think my first Ferrari is still a few years away, after all the research I've done so far. When I bought my SLK last year, I got an offer for a Ferrari 348 Spider that was selling for around $50k, so it was very tempting, since my SLK was $61k.

Here are pics of me with the Ferrari, at a used car lot across from the Quantico marine base.
    http://benzfanz.com/Ferrari348Spider/

So, when do you think you'll get your first Ferrari, now that you've just picked up the M roadster?

    ~shahedc
    .

p.s. 08 taurus? Did you mean some earlier year? or did you just buy a brand new 2008 taurus along with your M Roadster?
