Need some help guys, I would like to check the gearbox oil in my car, it is a 355F1 How dose one check this level? Should the engine be warm? I have a small leak coming from the gear box and it smells like gear oil, this leaks is booked in to be fixed but I want to be sure the oil is not low while I enjoy driving it around. Also, should the motor be running when I check the engine oil? I have checked it with the engine warm and running and it is just above the low mark, is this the correct procedure to check the engine oil?
Gearbox, Dip stick is on the left side of gearbox, mounted vertical, allen head. Pull, wipe clean, set back in hole and then read (do not screw it in to read). Run it towards Min. level on stick. Checking it hot makes for a miserable job. Very little change between hot and cold on the trans. Engine, Run until temp is HOT (15 mins at full coolant temp for those without an oil temp gauge) Shut off engine and quickly read stick that has been set in the tank, not screwed in. Run the oil level mid point between min and max unless the oil is scalding hot. Dave
And be prepared, it's a monster hex drive, and mine didn't budge with all the extensions on there. Plan B is to just wait for my major this winter... And thanks for those tips Dave
