I was at the Monterey Classic and had the unimaginable oppurtunity to be graced by many of the most beautiful and rarest cars around.

One thing that caught my interest was the exhaust tips on the 250 GT Berlinetta and 250 GTO's.

They had some sort of aerofoil shaped diffuser which pulled in outside air.

I would appreciate any information on this tip as is available, and I noticed that the tips were just screw on type. Do they make replicas of these?

    Thanks,
    -Ben Martin

SNAP exhaust tips are being reproduced, just poke around on the web - they are not cheap.

SNAPS were supposed to improve gas mileage and increase power, altho it is doubtful if they did either. I have seen them for Chinqucentos and Vespas, not just Ferraris.

I still have some, new in the boxes with instructions, and compared to them, the repros are not very authentic

I noticed the ones with the side openings as well, pretty cool..

    ANSA still catalogs them, also......

They do change the exhaust notes for the better. They were the only "mufflers" I had on by 275.

All non repo SNAPS that I have seen have the side openings. These are air intakes that accelerate the exhaust. The exit is circular, around the central canister hole and has curved vanes to induce a swirl.

SNAP (an acronym) bit the corporate dust in the '60s, so anything after that is a repo.

I will tag on another exhaust question. What is the purpose of the small exhaust tip metal shield that you sometimes see on the left side of the 250SWB? It is on the gas filler side so does it protect the exhaust from gas spillage or protect the legs of the guys filling the car from the hot exhaust tips?? It seems to only ever be on the left hand side of the car. I have never seem them on the right side.
    Thanks
    John

I think you'll find it's to protect the exhaust from spillage on the filler cap side.
