The production numbers across the entire range of the 2V inj Spiders are readily available; 1749 between chassis' 31309 anf 43079. Narrowing it down to the year only may be a little tougher to pin down. I would be interested in this info myself.

I believe Dave Meredith here has a 2V registry going.

He might be able to help break it down or at least narrow the #'s down by year.

I've been informally collecting these serial numbers for the past 4 years.

First documented 308 GTSI serial is 31309. Last one for 1980 (has an "A" for the year in the serial number) that I have is 34481.

Of course, during the run between these two (2) numbers were all of the other models of the day, not just the GTSi models.

Factory claims that there were only 29 1980 GTSi models made. I've personally collected over a hundred of these serial numbers so far, so the factory records are off concerning this point.

What's your car number, and what month was it made?

    Cheers - DM

When/where/how did they say that? That cannot possibly be right. I have been collecting serial #'s for the 2V inj cars myself for a couple of years.

Funny story; During the summer of 83 when I was 15 I was at Daytona Beach FL and a black/black 1980 GTSi pulled up. I was (and still am) a 308 fanatic to the first order and I emptied a roll of film on it. I had a pretty high end 35mm camera and you could actually see the chassis # in one of the pictures. The car was only 3 years old but it looked beat to hell on the inside, like what you would expect now. Anyway, I was looking at those pics again about 9 years ago and I thought to search the Ferrari Market Letter online sample to see about what month the car was built just for fun. The VERY first 1980 I looked at was THAT CAR. I $%#^ you not. Couldn't believe it. I called the guy selling it and filled him in on it's history and he sent me pictures.

Small world. I wonder what ever happened to it? When I get home I'll post the chassis #.

    413079 minus 31309 = 10,070. If odd chassis #'s only then 5,035. Of those 5,035 F-cars, 1,749 were GTSi's (1 out of every 2.878 cars made were GTSi's in those years).

Earliest GTSi chassis # = 31309. Last documented GTSi of 1980=34481.

34481-31309=3172. Odd only would be 1586. One out of every 2.878 would yield 551 308 GTSi's in 1980. Not scientific, but perhaps a good ballpark guess.

This is where F-chat could be come an "out of this world value/resource"....

I've got GTSi #31311. According to the odd numbers secence that means it's the #2 US production GTSi, (correct me if I'm wrong). That doesn't add $10K the value IMO, but is just kind of neat!

I personlly would like to know if 31309 is still around....

A month or so ago (as far as I can tell), the 1st serial #GTBi came up for sale...it didn't appear that the seller knew this fact (in fact I started a thread about it). Either way, these cars have an interseting asteric to their existance and with the sheer # of owners/watchers/fans on this site, a fair amount of history and kwnoledge could be gained.

The car I referred to was 32589 or 32509. All I could put my hands on right away was a COPY of the picture. I scanned them and printed the pics to snail mail them to the then-owner. (Not everyone had email in 97 or 98.) I guess I kept a few for some reason. When I find the original I'll be able to see it better.

Excuse my ignorance but how do you work out the month and year from the full serial number?

The year is a letter code which is the 10th digit in the serial number for US spec cars and some Middle Eastern countries.

    "A" is 1980, "B" is 1981, etc.

The month comes from the door tag, and is not reflected in the serial number.

    See my next post.

    a) The claim of only 29 GTSi cars made during the entire 1980 model year came directly from the factory in Italy! When I first bought my own car in 2003, I sent an e-mail to their Customer Service department asking how many other 1980 GTSi's were made; their reply came back as 29. I questioned them on this number at the time, as this sure seemed way low to me, and their reply came back confirming the 29 total.

I sent them another e-mail a couple of years ago, asking the same question (thinking that a different person on their end would now be looking it up) and the answer again came back to me as 29, so at least they are -consistently- incorrect!

I would put forth that the actual number of 1980 GTSi's is probably more like 500 to 600, the same total (more or less) as the number of 1981 and 1982 GTSi models made. I have collected an equal number of serial numbers from each of the three (3) model years (right about 100 nos. per each year so far) and there's no trend noted of the 1980 serial numbers being fewer in quantity than the other model years.

    b) According to my (very informal) research on this one, the serial number "break point" between 1980 and 1981 cars (those with an "A" vs. a "B" in their serial numbers) is about at chassis no. 34500 or so. Likewise, the break point between the 1981 and 1982 cars ("B" vs. "C") seems to fall at about 37750, again more or less.

    c) Months: The first "A" 1980 car that I have documented is Scott's car, manufactured in the month of March 1980. Similarly, the earliest "B" 1981 car found so far is November 1980, the first "C" 1982 car is June 1981, and the first "D" 1983 QV car is March 1982. Notice that this works out to only an approximate 8 to 9 month production run per each model year, which is, in itself, a curious bit of trivia.

    d) Stuart, I have car no. 32175 as being made in May 1980, not March!

Dave,Thanks for all the info on this matter. So i guess we will never know what the factory means when they say only 29 were made in 1980.The mystery goes on!

Why not just ask Ferrari for their 1981 and 1982 GTSi totals?

We already know the total # of GTSi's, so a little subtraction should yield 1980 numbers...

    Math.

Either all three years add up to the total production volume, or else they've given incorrect data.

    So that's how you'll know.

Does the door tag only feature on US spec cars as I can't see one on my UK RHD 84 QV? The manual I have shows the location of all the various plates and labels but nothing on the door.

Here's a typical "door tag" with serial number and manufacturing month data.

It's the one beneath the deck latch.

I'd guess that your UK car would not have the catalyst sticker.
