Just came across the news wire feed and the details are not yet completely clear - but McLaren has been excluded from the F1 Championship for 2007 and 2008. Whether this means both drivers and team is unclear. Further details coming in about 15 minutes.

Hmmm - I cut this from the Autosport site before it died:

    > Newsflash: McLaren excluded from 2007-08
    > By Steve Cooper Thursday, September 13th 2007, 14:57 GMT
    > The World Motor Sport Council has decided to exclude McLaren-Mercedes from the 2007 and 2008 Formula One world championship.

But now the story has "gone" - WTF?

The FIA is currently is recess (12:33 Est) and no decision has been made. They will have to way the costs and benefits of a major scandal in their sport and if McLaren truly benefited from the data. It will be a sad day for F1 no matter what the outcome....

PitPass is saying it has unconfirmed reports saying McLaren is banned from the 2007 & 2008 seasons. However it is not clear whether this applies in terms of constructors' points or whether the entire team is banned.

Would this mean that McLaren couldn't participate in the rest of this and next season or that they can but just cannot win points as a constructor?

According to reports on the BBC, the FIA's World Motor Sport Council has proposed that McLaren are excluded from the 2007 and 2008 World Championships.

However, the corporation claims that the exact nature of the punishment which will be meted out is still being discussed.

As such, Lewis Hamilton's World Championship bid may yet be rekindled, with McLaren expelled from the Constructors' Championship but both Alonso and Hamilton permitted to compete for the Drivers' title.

The FIA has confirmed that a definitive verdict is now imminent.

    More as we get it...

    From BBC website:

McLaren have been stripped of their points in the 2007 Formula One constructors' championship after the outcome of the 'spygate' row.
The team was also hit with a record $100m (£49.2m) fine but drivers Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso will be allowed to keep their points.

The team must also prove there is no Ferrari 'intellectual property' in its cars next year before they can race.

I have it that McLaren aren't able to score any more constructors points, they're able to keep the ones they've scored, and the drivers keep all of their points and will be able to score more. Or so the PitPass web site implies. They've been fined $100mil and as for 2008 their car will be closely examined at the end of the season.

I'm assuming if the FIA find anything equal or similar in design to the Ferrari further action will be taken then.

The question now becomes to do they race for the WDC or do they pack it in for the year? And BTW they also lose all the $$$$$$$$$$$$ awarded for their constructors points. I can't see them racing the rest of the year only to get points for LH and FA(who recently said he didn't give a **** about the WCC for McL). I think they pull the plug on this year.

So WCC is out for McLaren, but the drivers can still win WDC? Not that I'm complaining, I'm very pleased with the verdict. I guess those e-mails between drivers, turned out to be irrelevant after all........

There is no way that's gonna happen. That would be so unfair to the drivers, and F1 fans as well.

It is such a pity that the good name of Bruce McLaren has to be attached to this.
